“What time is she supposed to be here?” I ask Alex, watching as he runs around prepping his tables.

He places the ketchup bottle down on the last table and straightens both of the placed napkins. “I don’t know. I think both of our shifts started at six.”

It’s six-thirty. With a heavy feeling in my stomach, I make my way to the back corner table and sit down with my eyes fixed on the front door, waiting for it to open.

When the door opens, my heart stops as I wait and hope for Kiera to come bouncing through the entryway. No such luck. My breath hitches when I see who is coming through the door. What is he doing here?

I slouch down behind my book, hoping he doesn’t see me. I don’t want any more awkward encounters. The other day was as much as I could handle.

I peek over the top of my book and see him heading straight for me. Crap, crap, crap. Shit.

“Ms. Valcourt,” he says. “It’s a pleasure to see you here. It’s also a little out of the ordinary. I don’t typically see many of my students in this café.” Couldn’t he just pretend he didn’t see me? God.

I place my book down and clear my throat from the forming lump. “Hi, Professor Lane. This is one of my favorite places, actually,” I say, slinking down farther into my chair.

“I’ve been coming here for many, many years. You have good taste,” he says, his voice monotone. His eyes narrow and then widen. “I just can’t help but wonder what would drag you to this particular café?” His glare is making me uncomfortable. It’s making me feel as though he can read my mind and knows the exact reason why I know of this place.

“Oh,” I squeak. “My boyfriend works here.” I point over to Alex.

The professor looks over to Alex. I watch as the professor’s face contorts with an odd expression. “He’s your boyfriend?” he asks. “The wanderer.” His words are so soft that I’m not sure he intended for me to hear them. Did he just call Alex the wanderer?

“Do you know him?” I interrupt his intense stare in Alex’s direction.

“No, I don’t believe I do.” He shakes his head with a confused look. “Ms. Valcourt, I hope you did not forget about what I said to you last week. Please, make sure you are careful in the decisions you make. They can affect a lot more than you are aware of.” His forehead begins to glisten, and his voice sounds shrill. “Have a good night, Ms. Valcourt.” He tips his hat and leaves the cafe. He never ordered anything.

Alex approaches me the second my professor exits the door. “Who was that?” he asks, concern coursing through his eyes.

“He’s my professor, my psychology professor. My psychology professor who sounds like he knows more about my life than he should. Classes are being put on hold for a bit.”

“That might be the best idea right now. I
