Chapter Four

Lisa stared blankly at her roommate. “What?”

“Dr. Lindberg is my calculus professor.”

Duncan winced. “Hello, Kimberly,” he sighed. “I keep telling you that I prefer to go by Duncan.”

Lisa’s knees went wobbly, and she had to grip the doorframe to prevent herself from slipping to the floor. “You’re a professor?”

He turned his eyes towards his shoes. “Yes.”

“Oh, my god.” A wave of nausea curled through her. This couldn’t be happening. She’d just had sex with a professor. She was in love with a professor. “Why?” she whispered. “I’m a student. Why would you do this?”

“Lisa, it’s not that bad. Look, I’m a professor, but I’m not your professor.”

A hysterical laugh burst from her. “Oh, yeah, that makes it all better. You lied to me. You let me think you were a postdoc all this time and never said a single word. How could you do that to me?”

“I was going to tell you.”

“When? After I graduated? Or were you just waiting until after you had a chance to screw me?”

He shook his head. “It wasn’t like that. I was afraid you’d freak out about it, and I’d never have any kind of chance with you. I fully intended to tell you once we got to know each other better.”

“Well, I’d say we know each other pretty well now, don’t you think?”

“Look,” he said soothingly. “It’s going to be okay. There’s no rule against it as long as you’re not my student.”

She stared at him, mouth agape. “There’s no rule so it’s okay? Do you have any idea what’s going to happen when people find out? Everyone is going to think I’m screwing you for my grades. From now on, every single grade I get, people are going to wonder whether I earned it with my brains or on my back. Oh, Jesus,” she said, collapsing against the wall. “What if someone makes an accusation to my scholarship committee?”

Duncan bit his lip but said nothing as she tapped her head. “I’m smart. I’m really smart. That’s all I’ve got, Duncan, all I’ve ever had, and you knew that. But now people are going to wonder if I’m really smart or if I’m just a good lay. How could you do this to me?”

The tears started again as a sob tore through her.

“Maybe we should talk about this tomorrow after you’ve had a chance to calm down.”

Cold fury crystallized inside her and she bunched her fists. “Get out,” she snarled through gritted teeth. “Get out of here before I yell for the RAs.” She pushed herself upright and stepped back into her room. “Do not call me. Do not come by my work. Do not stalk me at school. If you so much as say ‘hi’ to me in passing I will go straight to the dean. Do you understand?”

He nodded sharply, his eyes bleak. “I understand.”

“Goodbye.”

She slammed the door and spun towards the couch, stumbling because she could no longer see for the tears welling up. Then Kimberly’s hands were on her, guiding her and easing her down onto the cushions.
