Chapter 11

When I arrive at the lab, I find Dr. Channing leaning over one of the metal autopsy tables.

“Dr. Channing, I’m here.”

“Oh, Adelaide. Terrific.”

“Tell me what happened.”

“Well, as you know, I have two phones. One which I receive calls when there is a body and one where I receive calls when the alarms are set off.”

I stand still for a moment to figure out what he’s saying. It’s so early, not even daylight, and I’m not caffeinated yet.

“So, someone triggered the alarm?”

“Precisely.”

“And Officer Huntley?”

“Was over here in drawer six.” He ambles over and points at the freezer drawer… the only drawer that was slightly open.

“Did you find the drawer open when you came in?”

Yes.” He turns to me and smiles. “You ask a lot of good questions, my dear. You should be a police officer or a detective.”

“I don’t think so. I’d rather be on this side of the investigation.” I look back at the drawer. “I’m calling the cops.”

“Good idea. I was so frazzled by what happened that I forgot.”

“I understand.” I walk over to the phone, but I continue to watch Dr. Channing cautiously. I can’t help but worry about him sometimes.

Once the police arrive at the morgue, they go over everything thoroughly and question us. Officer Huntley’s partner asks Dr. Channing the same questions that I had asked.

“You know, young Adelaide here just asked me the same thing,” Dr. Channing replies. “She’s a bright girl, that one. I think she’d make an excellent detective one day.”

I almost start shaking my head to interject, until I see Sheriff Richards look my way.

“Did she now?” he walks toward me and puts his thumbs in his belt loops. “Is that true, Miss Paige?”

“Yeah. It’s common sense, right? Dr. Channing often forgets. I was just making sure he had everything covered. I didn’t want your investigation to be stuffed up.”

“That’s very thoughtful of you, Miss Paige. What else did you ask Dr. Channing?” The sheriff pulls a small notepad out of his breast pocket, and he clicks open his pen, poised and ready to take notes.

“I beg your pardon?”

“What other questions did you ask the good doctor, Miss Paige?”

I switch my gaze between Sheriff Richards and Dr. Channing. They were both regarding me, waiting for my answer. Why was it I always felt I was under a microscope? I clear my throat and shift my weight uncomfortably.

“I only asked if the freezer drawer was open when he arrived.”

“Is that all?” He writes something down on his notepad.

“Yes. That’s all.”

“Miss Paige, I have to ask that you come down to the station with Dr. Channing for a few more questions.”

“Again?”

“Yes, again. This is a new twist in the plot. I need you to help us understand what happened, that’s all.”

“But I’m not a suspect, am I?”

“I didn’t say you were.”

“But you implied that.”

“Look, Miss Paige, you are testing my patience. Do I have to forcefully arrest you?”

“No. Fine, I’m coming.”

Sheriff Richards leads Dr. Channing out of the morgue as crime scene technicians arrive.
