Tonight’s show is turning out to be as crazy as last night. Kelley’s pacing in front of the tent on his phone trying to find more merch. We have exactly one hat and two shirts remaining, and the show doesn’t start for an hour. The line of fans standing in front of me will not be happy to hear that.

“It’s not happening tonight,” he says, sneaking back into the tent behind me.

“I guess you won’t lose to me tonight since we literally have nothing to sell.”

He smiles and shakes his head.

“Hey, the game was your idea, not mine. I’m only waiting on the day you can make good on that.”

“It’s coming, don’t you worry. We have plenty of time.” He checks his watch and worry covers his face. “Hey, can you watch the tent for a few minutes? I have to make a phone call.”

“Sure,” I say, curious about these phone calls, but I shake it off. They’re none of my business.

“Thanks, I owe you.”

He walks out of the tent with the phone already pressed to his ear. Within moments, his face lights up. A pang of jealousy hits my heart. We’re friends and nothing more. If he has a wife or girlfriend at home, it doesn’t matter.

“Hey! I want a shirt!” The request comes from the mob in front of me.

“We’re all out of merch. Would you like a voucher you can redeem online?”

“I guess,” the man says with a huff.

I repeat this process for the next thirty minutes before Kelley returns and takes the reins. The line is smaller since word has gotten out that we’re out of merch, but that isn’t keeping the occasional drunk from coming to the tent to ask anyway.

“I’m going to the stage to get ready for the show.”

He nods but doesn’t respond.

Backstage, Salvo, his long black beard hanging down over his lap, is sitting on a chair, pounding on a white bucket. Seeing him warms my heart. These guys are quickly becoming great friends and after handling screaming fans by myself, I’m glad to see him.

“Hey Jordan. These crowds are insane, yeah?”

“They really are. We ran out of merch about an hour ago. Most fans were happy with vouchers, some weren’t. You guys are killing it.”

“Shit! I never thought the first couple of shows would be this crazy but fuck, I’m stoked!”

I throw him some rockers horns and hurry to the stage to set up my camera. Just as I’m about to step onto the side stage, I hear Trigger singing somewhere nearby. I follow his voice to a small room off the hall where I found Salvo. Guitar riffs play as Trigger sings his sad song from last night.

“It’s been so long I thought I was fine

But seeing you tears away that façade

Seeing you takes me on that same high…”

His words are born from pain. Pain so deep I can feel it in every bone. It’s the kind of pain that wrecks you, a pain that no person should ever have to overcome.
