SHRUBS surrounded a stone walkway through flowers of all shapes and sizes. Leandre had never witnessed such a vast collection of flora in one area. Despite how amazed he was, he couldn’t enjoy it. Victor’s threat and Kestrel’s confession stung his heart and weighed down his steps.

“What did Victor say to you that made you so down, doll?” Estella paused where shrubs parted into an open area of dark green grass.

“He believes he knows about me and Fremont,” Leandre answered, controlling the anger in his voice. “He said he’ll use it against Fremont tomorrow.”

“I see.” Estella looked away to hide her expression, but Leandre saw how her shoulders tensed. “Quinn is a wonderful magistrate. I doubt he’ll care if Fremont is with a demon.”

“You don’t sound as certain as I’d like.”

“I don’t know Quinn as well as I’d like.”

Leandre sighed. “I’ve caused a mess. I shouldn’t have come.”

“Victor will do anything in his power to get Fremont convicted regardless of your presence.” Estella crouched down and touched a flower sprouting in a crack in the walkway.

“I don’t want to be the reason why Fremont can’t return to Fenian.”

Estella plucked the flower and rose. She tucked it into Leandre’s lapel and smiled. “I have no intention of allowing Fremont to be convicted. I promise.”

“Fremont told me about Alex. You should discuss your intention with him. Ten years is a hefty sacrifice to make if it becomes meaningless when he can’t save you.”

“How long should I allow a sacrifice to continue?” Estella returned without breaking her smile. “How long would you allow him to ruin his life for you?”

Leandre frowned at the choice of wording and the implications behind it. “As long as he sees fit. No one can change Fremont’s resolve.”

“I didn’t mean to say he is ruining his life for you. I hope you don’t think that.”

Leandre glanced back down the path. “He seems to fit into this lifestyle. There wasn’t an awkward transition period one might expect after ten years. He fell right back into his role. How can I be so sure he doesn’t belong here with Kestrel?”

“Habits are not happiness.” Estella touched the flower in Leandre’s lapel and started toward the house.

“Estella,” Leandre called out. She stopped and glanced over her shoulder. “Do you love Kestrel?”

She smiled and turned to him. “I do. But I’m sworn to another. Why?”

“If he loves you too, why marry another?”

“I’m not sworn to another in the sense you’re thinking. I’ve promised to remain alone. This is my sacrifice for Fremont’s.”

“Your brother wants you happy, Estella. Why else would he give up ten years for you?”

“You’re sweet, Leandre.” Estella dismissed Leandre’s question with a warm smile. “Thank you for the company.”

“Did you need to escape seeing Kestrel and Fremont together as much as I?”

She studied his honest expression and nodded. “Not just sweet, but smart too.”
