Chapter Fifteen

Sophie

Jonas whispers question after question while we wait out the antidote. Each time he speaks to me, it grates on my nerves. Carrigan doesn’t wake until the afternoon, and when he does, I’m ready with bottled water and some fresh fruit, in case he feels stable enough to eat.

Jonas is in awe of his friend’s state. “He seems so much better. What do you think tipped it?”

“I swear, Jonas, if you ask me one more time what the herbs were that I gave him, I’m locking you out of your own room. I. Don’t. Know. Mother chose them because she knew I wanted Cary to get better. Mother doesn’t need to explain herself to me, which means I can’t explain myself to you more than that. And would you look at that? Cary’s not in pain anymore.”

Carrigan munches on a grape as he stands at the side of the bed, looking vibrant and alert, as if he’d never been sick in the first place. Granted, his skin still has a faint tint of yellow to it, but his eyes are now white around the alluring green, giving us all hope.

Jonas grumbles about witches but I’m not paying attention. Cary seems a thousand times better, and I know that with a bit of sunlight, that margin will only increase. “I feel amazing. I haven’t been able to do sit-ups in a while. Too painful. But I feel like I could do ten minutes straight right now.”

“Not on this carpet, you don’t,” Jonas grumbles.

The door creaks open and a fifth joins us. “And what problem do you have with my carpet? Not up to the Twin Heights’ standards, is it? Shame.”

Jonas is unamused. “Well, it’s got blood stains all over it, for one. It smells like feet and regret, for two.”

My spine straightens when my eyes fall on the very same vampire I spotted on my way in to Twin Rivers. He’s dapper, if nothing else. But I think that’s the nature of a pressed shirt, nicely fitted trousers and suspenders. He’s not sucking on the neck of an old man who’s rubbing himself, but the mental image of this vampire’s smug control over his victim still smacks me with fresh ick. Daddy told me to steer clear of vampires, so I plan on making this encounter a short one.

The mid-twenties newcomer sniffs with his nose in the air and points to a spot near the wall. “That stain’s not blood at all. It’s rum, thank you very much.” He’s got short, perfectly parted and combed jet-black hair and sharply angular features. His pale skin is pristine as porcelain, giving off the vibe of a fairy prince come to life. Vampires are generally pleasing to stare at—it’s part of their predatory nature. They draw you in with their appearance, the sound of their voice, and anything else you might need in order to leave logic behind. But this guy is just overkill. He’s beautiful in a way that seems unfair to the rest of the world.
