Late that evening Gerry parked himself on the newly stained veranda, his mind shuttling between Ginny and Karen. He kept a lonely vigil on Karen’s house; hoping, wishing, praying, she might come out for an evening walk. Her car and Branko’s were there, but the blue flickering light of the television behind the curtains was the only sign of life. Despondency rolled over him like a slowly encircling fog mixed with an impatience, wanting more of her.

Could Karen just be using him for a way out of her loveless marriage? If he was being played, she was a great actor. He sensed that Branko was a bully, and Gerry often ignored bullies, for the most part. This time though, the bully would not be ignored.

Once in bed, he stared at the gold Spanish medallion reflecting in the candle’s light on the night table, hoping its glow would be a beacon for her.

He fell asleep.
