_______________

I fell into a heap on the grass when Blaze finally blew the whistle to release us from practice. My arms hurt from West’s flames having licked at them the entire practice. Sure I had worked up my tolerance to higher flame temperatures, but when you’re fighting to defend yourself, you still get some small injuries. At least I would heal quickly from the burns.

A hand appeared in front of my face and I took it, knowing it was Blaze’s. He pulled me to stand in front of him, both of us shining with sweat from a long day in the Texas heat.

“How is still seventy-six degrees in November? I mean, Thanksgiving is in a week and we’re still sweating daily,” I asked, out of breath.

He smiled down at me. “How long have you lived in Texas? The forecast says next week should finally drop into the fifties; that’ll be nice.”

I nodded in agreement. “I’m starving. Come eat in the cafeteria with me?”

He nodded once, then grabbed both of our bags as we walked past them. I didn’t even care that I probably smelled like a wet dog, I was hungry and I was pretty sure he smelled worse so he couldn’t complain. We made our way to the cafeteria, scanned our little campus IDs and then made our way to the fried foods line. Blaze grabbed some tongs and made a plate full of fries, then grabbed another plate from under the tray slide and began piling other delicious things. I grabbed a huge burger patty then piled fries around it.

We both carried our plates carefully to a little table away from the main part of the dining area and scarfed silently for a few minutes before we were finally full enough to start talking.

“What are you doing tonight?” Blaze asked softly.

I met his eyes. “I have research to do on how elemental combat medics have changed both the non military and the elemental military.”

He nodded. “Did you pick the topic or did you get assigned it?”

“Assigned. Want to hang out while I write it?”

“Sure. Cool, cool . . .” he trailed off, as if he were nervous or something.

I swallowed a mouthful of fries. “What’s up with you? You’re acting weird.”

Blaze looked at me, but quickly looked away. “I was wondering what you were doing for the Thanksgiving break next week?”

“I’m staying on campus. My dad says he’s working double-overtime and that way he can take off a full two weeks at Christmas. Why, what’re you doing?”

He smirked a bit. “I was going to go home, but I think I’ll stay. Maybe we could get together or something after you’ve finished with classes next Wednesday?”

I smiled over at him. “Yeah, that’d be great, Blaze.”
