âWHAT SHOULD we do?â Bertie asked Casey on the phone as he sat behind his desk before the store opened. âI already phoned Donald and spoke to him about what happened last night. He said that wonât have any effect on what he was going to do today other than adding to his case because of her behavior.â
âJenn wasnât at the house this morning. I did update the missing person report and closed it. She has been found, as far as the law is concerned, and if she isnât at the house or where she should be, then itâs up to her now. If she doesnât want to stay where she can be contacted, she doesnât have to.â Jenn was an adult, and there was nothing Bertie could do about it.
âDoes it make me a bad person to hope that she stays away as long as sheâs behaving like this?â Bertie asked quietly. âIâd like to try to help her, but I donât think Jenn wants any help.â
âYour sister has spent the last two weeks as high as a kite. Iâm willing to bet she doesnât even know how much time has passed. She stopped taking her meds, began feeling terrible and out of control, then probably slipped into self-medicating. I donât know what sheâs been using, but this isnât very good.â
âIf we see her again, we need to do something to get her away from these people. I didnât recognize the friend from last night. Maybe it was another person from that group.â He had no idea what the hell was going on, but Jenn was definitely in troubleâhe knew that deep downâand he was helpless to do anything about it. Maybe he should have had the police come and take her in. It was possible they could have gotten something coherent out of her. Though knowing his sister, it was more likely that sheâd get stubborn and tell no one anything.
âSheâs off in her own world right now. Maybe sheâll snap out of it and maybe she wonât. We arenât going to know until it happens.â Casey sounded as down as Bertie felt. âThe thing is that sheâs involved somehow with these robberies that Iâm investigating, so even if the missing person case is closed, Iâll still keep an eye out and try to find her. I doubt she knows anything about that, but she might be able to help us find our suspects.â He paused. âI need to get back to work.â
âMe too. Iâll see you later.â Bertie hung up and sat at the desk, wondering what he would have done without Casey and knowing that he had to do all he could for Beau, Jolie, and Phillip. He knew they missed their mother, but seeing her the way she was last night would only hurt them more.
