Chapter 9

OUTSIDE it was blustery, dark, and cold, but the inside of the coffee shop had been filled with good smells—cinnamon and baking pumpkin, coffee, and chocolate. Lex and Tally had decided to host their first annual pumpkin-carving and cookie-decorating party. Drew and Mason, Lex and Tally, Amy and her new “not girlfriend” Tanya, otherwise known as Dr. Wu, and Justin and Logan were all crowded around the counter, taking sips of spiked coffee drinks and giving their Halloween cookies slightly obscene decorations.

Logan had passed the floaty stage of tipsy and gotten into the giggles. Amy pointed at his cookie. “Please tell me you did not just give him a boner.”

His scarecrow did have a piece of candy corn sticking out from it at a rather noticeable angle. Justin followed Amy’s pointed finger and collapsed into laughter against Logan’s shoulder.

“You totally did,” he said, and he turned to bury his face in Logan’s chest before he waltzed back to the cookie he’d been decorating.

Logan had already decided he liked tipsy Justin. He was open, didn’t have to be coaxed into touching like he often did when they were sober. And Logan liked touching. Really liked it. It felt good. Real. Natural, like they’d always done it. Of course, the other night jumped into his head, when he’d started thinking in terms of love and the future and…. Oh God, did I just think that word? Logan choked on his coffee with peppermint schnapps and pretended to look for a candy corn to put where his cookie’s nose should be.

Justin brought his cookie, a pumpkin with a toothy grin and lots of gloopy purple frosting, over to put it on the sheet. Logan snorted.

“That’s… lovely.”

“It is, isn’t it?” Justin gave him a saucy grin. “At least mine doesn’t look sexually frustrated.”

Yeah, so Logan’s scarecrow might have had a piece of candy corn sticking out of its… well, yeah. Probably was fitting. Sexually frustrated. Damn, he was. In a second, he nearly choked again, wondering if it showed on his face, in every movement he made toward Justin.

“Shut it,” Logan said gently and bumped Justin with his hip. He chuckled, and Justin bumped him back, then laid his head on Logan’s shoulder.

“Why?” Justin pointed at Logan’s cookie again and snorted. “That thing looks like it needs to be put out of its misery.”

Logan giggled again, giggled, then grabbed his cookie and shoved it in Justin’s face. Justin laughed back and took a big gloppy pile of frosting on his finger. He wiped it down the side of Logan’s face and turned to run.

“All right, you two, knock it off.” Tally’s tone was warning, but he looked like he was about to burst into laughter. He and Lex exchanged a long, significant look, like they knew something Logan and Justin didn’t. “It’s a pain to get frosting out of your hair, anyway. Believe me.”

“Sorry, I’ll clean it up.” Logan snorted out another laugh. Justin had cookie crumbs clinging to his face and a laugh threatening to erupt.
