The proof of morning shines through my window. I sit up, feeling exhausted. My little bird is back at the window. She’s so beautiful with her little clip of red on her wings. “Fly away little one; go on, go about your day.” I give my head a shake. “You’re not Snow White,” I chastise myself and shake my head again.

On my vanity, there’s a note from Ryder:

Sweat Lodge Ceremony

Saturday the 17th

10:00 – 2:00

I’ll pick you up at 9, wear a long skirt.

Ryder

My heart flutters. I look at myself in the mirror and wonder why I feel so scared. I force myself to stop thinking about it. I make my bed and get dressed. Downstairs everybody is at the table already. Gail looks up and looks me over.

“Good morning, Izzy.” She tilts her head. “You must be hungry.”

“Good morning, and I am.”

I sit down feeling a little awkward. I missed an entire day yesterday. Chelsea looks over at me. I smile. She smiles back before grabbing another piece of bacon. I fill my plate with toast, an egg, and a couple slices of tomato. I finish my toast first by dipping it into the dark orange yolk.

Gail looks up at me. “I hope you haven’t made any plans for today.”

“Not yet. How come?”

“I’ve made you an appointment to see a therapist. I should have made an appointment right after we had visited the doctor. I’m sorry that I didn’t.”

“What time is it at?”

“Ten.”

“Do we have to go far?” I don’t know why I ask this. Again. It’s not like I have plans.

“No, he’s just over on Lonsdale.”

I nod and finish my breakfast. Once done, I get up and clear my dishes. I feel weird, maybe even horrible. I walk over to the table and behind where Gail sits. I lean over and wrap my arms around her and whisper, “I’m sorry about yesterday. I really don’t know what came over me.”

“I was worried, Izzy. That’s why I’ve made you an appointment.”

“I know.” I release her and stand back up. “I’m sorry.” I stifle tears.
