Getting Ready

Dawn came with the long awaited hint of a dryer day ahead. The rain had stopped and the sun was peeking out. Arrenden enjoyed the sunrise, as he breathed in the fresh, clean air. The ground was saturated, mud and water were everywhere; it would take more than one day to dry it out. His men would all be wet and muddy, before this day was done, but hopefully with what they knew they would all still be alive.

The regiments were up and readying for their marches, happy not to have to wear rain gear. The atmosphere was filled with excitement. The elves were all anxious to be getting back out in the forest. Most had no idea what the day was about to bring.

Saren had gotten up well before daylight. Fixing breakfast for herself and Finn, she thought back, on the days of the ancient Wizard War. She wanted to make sure Finn ate breakfast today as it could be their only meal for the day; one never knew what might happen when the fighting started.

“Finn, ye best be waking. Breakfast is near ready, the sun is coming up. The troops’ll be marching and we have work to do,” she called. She liked having the boy here. She’d raised her two nieces after her sister died, but they were grown, now, and the house often felt empty. It would be nice to have another young one around. Children had a way of keeping one young.

For elves it was not physically hard to stay young. They lived for many centuries. Somehow, time seemed to stop for them around their mid twenties. It wasn’t until their final days when, if they chose, they aged quickly before passing. Saren was, in fact, centuries older then her nieces. In appearance, though, she only looked to be in her late 20’s, early 30’s.

She stood there stirring her pot and thinking back on days long ago. Her sister, Queen Meriwehn, Bo and Cassi’s mother, was Saren’s youngest sister, by over 70 years. The difference in age only seemed to strengthen their bond. Meriwehn was the one sister Saren had been close to.

Long before Meriwehn was born, Saren had fallen in love and married. Meriwehn’s birth was close to the same time as Saren’s second child. She had been a playmate to Saren’s children, often staying at the cottage for long periods of time. She had become Saren’s fourth child. Those were such happy years for Saren raising her family and studying her magic.

Her children grew up and had gone out on their own. Saren’s father had arranged for Meriwehn to marry the King. Then the Wizard War came. Saren and her husband had joined the King’s forces to fight. Bloody battles ensued, costing many lives on both sides. Saren didn’t even know how she had become a leader with a dragon, but she had. One day, while she was off fighting, her village was attacked. Saren lost both her husband and her children that day.
