Chapter Twelve

The moment Ava walked into the realty office, she regretted it. What was she thinking? Dressed in a blue sundress and a matching hat, she knew what she had been thinking. She had finished writing up the plans and giving out instructions, and now it was time to look at the competition. She figured she could kill two birds at one time and spend some time with Everett. If it worked out, then it would be the beginning of a new experience for her, and if it didn’t, she’d write it off as a business trip. When she thought about it last night, the plan seemed foolproof. Now that she was here, she wondered what she had been thinking.

“I hope you don't mind me showing up?” Ava asked.

“No, you're welcome anytime,” Everett said.

Did everything this man say have to sound like an invitation? There was something about the timbre of his voice. It slowly seeped into her body and warmed her like a cup of hot chocolate on a warm day. If she felt this way and it was just lunch, what was going to happen if they were in an actual relationship?

“I made an appointment with a company that I consider to be one of our competitors, and I thought I would get some insights. You can come as my assistant,” Ava said.

Everett laughed. “Your assistant? Oh, I see someone is having fun,” Everett said with a smile.

His smile was infectious, and Ava held out her hand to him. “Well, let’s not keep our lunch appointment waiting.”

Everett took her hand and tucked it under his arm, and looked down into her eyes. “I’m yours.”

Ava hoped the heat that she felt wasn’t apparent on her face.

“Stop stalling, and let’s get going,” she said, hoping she could make it to the car without swooning at his feet. How long had it been since a man had teased her? Just when she didn’t think anything else could happen that would throw her off, Everett stopped after they were outside of the office.

“Yes?” she said, looking up.

“That dress is beautiful on you.”

“You’re good, Everett, but keep your compliments. I’m spending every dime of the grant money, and I’m expecting a discount on the brownstone still,” she said resolutely.

Everett chuckled. “I noticed that you bring up business when you get nervous. It seems that you get nervous around me a lot. You think that’s a sign?”

Ava wanted to yell yes, it was a sign for her to run while she could because this man was like a magician around her.

“I think it’s a sign that we need to get going. Can you drive, Everett?”

“Wow, I see someone is really throwing the gauntlet down. That’s no problem for me, Ava. If you need a chauffeur, I can be that and more for you.”

“Don't you ever give up?”

“Not when it matters.”
