The breakfast room table was round with a pedestal base. A matching buffet sat against the wall. Underneath the table lay a dhurrie rug with blue-and-gold medallions on a field of dark red. Five chairs surrounded the table, their wooden seats softened with red and dusty-blue plaid cushions. A bronze chandelier with little linen shades hung over the table, which was still bare, as was the buffet, since Rachel hadn’t had a chance to decorate in this room yet.

Still, Mark was pleased to have a table. If necessary, he and the guys could play cards in here until the gathering room was finished, he thought.

A box in the corner of the kitchen held an assortment of items he and Rachel had picked up during a leisurely shopping outing earlier in the week. Focusing almost fiercely on her work, she put together a centerpiece made up of a mirrored base, a glass jar filled with river rocks and bamboo stalks, and a couple of glass candleholders. Bamboo place mats completed the table arrangement—all of which had taken her maybe fifteen minutes, he thought with an admiring shake of his head.

She moved to the buffet. “Since I didn’t have my helpers with me today, I sweet-talked the delivery guys into helping me hang this heavy mirror,” she said, her voice brisk and impersonal. “I think it looks great here. By reflecting the glass doors and the patio beyond, it makes the breakfast room look big and bright.”

“It does look good,” he agreed, though he was looking at her, and not the mirror.

She pretended not to notice as she set a pair of antique brass candlesticks on one end of the buffet, and a heavy footed brass bowl on the other end for fresh fruit. Three bright red pots planted with fresh herbs added color and fragrance when lined in front of the low mirror.

She chatted as she worked, telling him that he could use the buffet to store extra serving pieces and linens, and that he could easily change the look of the room occasionally with seasonal flowers and fruits or different-colored candles or place mats. He nodded as if he were paying close attention to her advice, rather than wishing they were back upstairs in his bedroom, trying out that comfortable new mattress.

She caught his attention again when she asked, “Did you hear from Ethan last night?”

“No,” he said, pushing his hands into his pockets. “There was no need for him to call. I told him I’d let him know when the test results come in, and I’m not expecting them for another few days yet.”

“I thought maybe the two of you would talk occasionally while you wait for the results. Get to know each other better, find out more about your family so you’ll be ready to meet them when you let Ethan tell them about you.”

He shrugged. “There’s not much more to say right now. I’ll deal with them when the time comes.”
