"Well now what?" Naz inquired obnoxiously over my shoulder. I glanced over at Kylen who had his brow knit intensely. The mechanism that allowed the gate to open for vehicles had been destroyed in the tapering; and now the truck was rumbling, and vibrating as we idled in front of it. Kylen reached over a compartment in front of my knees; and plucked out a piece of paper; flicking his wrist to unfurl the accordion folds before he pressed it across the steering wheel, smoothing his palms across it. I stretched my neck up to glance across him until I could see that the paper was a map. I watched Kylen's lips quiver gently as he traced his finger over routes.

"It looks like there's one other route out, but it's over 20 miles in the other direction. It'll be dark before we ever even get out of the city." Kylen sighed.

"Can't you just drive over it or something?" Rou quipped.

"Hey!" Naz reached over to slap Kylen in the chest. "Yeah! Just plow right through it!"

" I don't know...." Kylen's voice was soft, and careful as he spoke. "I mean, this gate; it's a part of this city. I feel like it's a part of me. It seems so wrong to destroy it."

"It's just a gate." I said, and reached over to place my hand over his, and give it a firm squeeze. "The city is in theatre, and the restaurant across the street. The city is in all the people there rallied together to take care of each other." A flutter rippled across my chest as his sad, deep eyes met mine. "All the best parts of the city are left, and working, and thriving; and they'll rebuild this gate just like they'll rebuild every structure the Tapering tore down." Kylen's eyes glittered as he nodded, and shook of my hand to reach down to shift the gears into reverse.

"Awesome." I heard Naz whisper as I craned my neck to eye the road as the truck hurtled backward. Kylen mashed the brake, and jerked the stick back into drive position before he reached over to tightly clutch my hand. I turned to meet his eyes, and nodded softly. He exhaled slowly, giving my hand a tight squeeze before he mashed the gas pedal. My heart pounded fiercely in my chest as the truck hurtled forward into gate; knocking it cleanly off one of the hinges to jut out to the right.

Naz and Rou whooped as they reached up to clap Kylen across his back, and shoulders. He shot me a wide smile as we rumbled our way down the road leading away from the center. I placed my knees under me, and turned to watch the stack of rubble from the auditorium shrink, and shrink until it sat a stark black speck on the horizon.

I held Vega's smile behind my eyes as I bade her a silent goodbye. A hot tear rolled over my cheek as I placed my hand over my heart, drew it up to press a kiss into my fingertips, and blew it into the wind.
