Change your thoughts, change your world

Like many people, I was raised to make choices based on fear, scarcity and duty. I never really hoped for or aspired to much in life, because I didn’t think anything truly great was possible for me and I was too afraid to try.

I spent my late teens and early twenties dealing with the consequences of those fear-fuelled choices. I felt scared of everything, and didn’t or couldn’t trust anyone. I didn’t know how. I played very small in my career, had multiple abusive relationships and avoided intimacy with anyone. Later, I began to explore different spiritual teachings and came to understand that my thoughts and beliefs had actually created my reality. I realized that if I wanted my environment to change, I needed to change my perspective on life.

Adopting positivity has been one of the greatest things I’ve ever done for myself. I believe that how we choose to start each new day dictates precisely the kind of day that we then have. Choosing to maintain a positive outlook and feeling hopeful about what the day may hold will change the day itself. On the other hand, ruminating, worrying and feeling anxious is the best way to line up further challenges.

Both options are available to all of us, and it’s important to remind ourselves that we have a choice about which path we go down. That way, we can empower ourselves to take action about anything we’re not happy about. The ‘letting go’ can be scary, but when we do just that and begin to nurture a compassionate relationship with ourselves, we are inspired to make choices that support that view.

So much of this process is about ‘waking up’. We spend 95 per cent of our lives running on autopilot and acting and reacting without being fully present. When we go about our days, we are able to get to work and perform daily tasks without having to really ‘think’ about what we’re doing. We are often thinking about other things entirely: the fight we had with our partner, what we are going to make for dinner, or a television programme we just watched. Yet our subconscious mind is still working, and part of the process of healing is when we become conscious and mindful of how often we are in this distracted state.

When we are not consciously present in our own lives, we become passive bystanders – even though we are creating our reality with our thoughts and actions. When we become conscious, we engage in our lives with intention and purpose – and from this platform we become the creator of our reality.

If we want to change, then we have to become conscious of our subconscious behaviour. As we begin to observe our own patterns and how we act, we give ourselves the opportunity to change and to make new choices; we can’t do this when we are disconnected and disengaged.

Whenever I sense dissatisfaction with any area of my life, I remind myself that if I want to change something, then I need to change how I’m thinking about it.
