The next evening I went to the library for my 7:30 date with Charlie. I found him just inside the front doorway.

“Can I help you carry your books?” he asked with his arms outstretched.

“You don’t have any?” I asked, giving him mine.

He shook his head.

“Well, if you don’t have to study, why are you here?” I teased him.

He grinned. He didn’t have to answer. I knew he had come just to see me. He wasn’t going to miss our time together. Charlie was doing everything right in our relationship, and boy did that make me feel good.

We sat at our usual spot. Danny and his crew were at the table next to us.

I told Charlie I was struggling with some of the cheer-leading moves. He encouraged me not to give up, that my hard work would pay off.

“You can make the team,” he said, “but not alone. You need God to be there with you.” He held my hands and closed his eyes. “Father, we thank You for giving us a vision. Thank You for using our gifts and talents and giving us the desire to please You and serve You with what You’ve given us. I pray right now for Laurel. Lord, she wanted so badly to be on the gymnastics team here, but it didn’t work out, and we believe that’s because You’re opening the door for something else. Show her how to make the cheerleading squad if that’s Your will, Father. Help her not to be afraid. I thank You for allowing our friendship to grow and develop. She’s a special lady and I’m blessed to know her. We love You and praise You. Amen.”

Danny leaned over from the next table. “Hey, were you guys praying just now?” he asked sarcastically.

“Yeah,” Charlie said. “So?”

He snorted. “You really believe in God?”

Charlie stood, and I stood behind him. “If you died tomorrow,” Charlie asked Danny, “do you know where you would go?”

“Yeah,” the cocky guy answered. “I’ll be in a box covered with six feet of dirt. I suppose you think you’ll go up to the sky and live forever?”

The guys around Danny started laughing. My heart broke at their ignorance. Getting a degree was what we had come to school to do. But accepting Christ was what God wanted us to do. Unfortunately, they didn’t know that.

“That’s exactly what we believe,” Charlie said with conviction.

“Oh, really?” Danny retorted. “What makes you think you’re good enough to go to heaven?”

Charlie smiled. “I’m not. That’s what’s so great. I know I’m a sinner, but I’m going to heaven anyway. All I have to do is call on Jesus’name.”

“Whatever,” Danny said, turning away. “You believe whatever you want.”

“I believe God is real. Just as real as you or me.”

“Oh, yeah?” Danny said, looking Charlie in the eye. “Well, I prayed to Him when I was ten years old. I prayed that my dad would stay with my mom. A couple of days later, Dad walked out the door with all his stuff and his new girlfriend.
