Chapter 13
Jude got out of the car after Keziah. He looked up at the two-story building that Keziah had told him was the safe house where he would stay for now. She had yet to tell him what her plan was that he would not like very much. He looked at her again and said, “Keziah, you still haven't told me what your plan is. I need to know.”
She nodded. “Fine. Let's go in, and I will tell you.”
The driver and her trusted guard stood near the car, while Jude went into the building with Keziah. Outside, the building looked nondescript, but he looked around as they walked in and it looked like a storage facility. There were rows of boxes stacked one on top of the other in the first large room they walked through. The second space was filled with all sorts of things, from furniture to farming tools and equipment. They walked through another space, larger than the first two. There were huge containers of who-knew-what. Jude’s curiosity finally got the best of him, and he pointed and asked Keziah what they were.
She waved her hand dismissively. “Just stuff the party plans to use when we take over.”
He didn't even want to ask what the ‘stuff’ was, especially what was in the huge containers.
They left the large room, walked down a corridor, and entered another room — an office this time, with a wooden desk and table, and a wall-to-wall bookcase filled with books. Keziah shut the door after Jude and pointed to the chair in front of the desk. When he sat, she took her seat in the chair behind the desk. She threaded her fingers together, her elbows resting on the desk, and leaned forward to look him in the eye.
He stared back at her and waited with bated breath for her to begin.
“Just as I said earlier, Jude, you might not like what I have to tell you, but it's the only way.” She paused and searched his eyes. When he didn’t say anything, she went on. “Just as you said before, we cannot remain in this country. You have to be sent away, and I have to come with you.” Jude frowned, and she quickly added, “because when Felix finds out that I helped you escape, and he will find out very soon, my life will be in danger.”
Jude sighed, and she continued, “I don't like the way Felix and the others in the party have gone about taking over this country. I agree with the ideology and all, but I don't like the violence that has been going on, and I certainly don't want to stay here and witness what is to come. Like you, I don't want to be a part of it any longer.”
He stared at her in surprise. “I didn't know you felt this way,” he said.
She shrugged. “How could you know? I just want to get you out of here.” She gave him a small smile and then took his hand on the table.
