CHAPTER FIFTEEN
âYouâre back where you belong,â Tavion whispered in my ear through Trent's lips. He kissed my earlobe. A burning blast shot through my skin. I shuddered, and tried to yank away, but he tightened his grip.
I stared at Jan, hoping sheâd blink, take a breath, but she didnât. Despair filled me because I knew I was next. All of my deaths had led me here, to my final ending. But I wasnât about to let Tavion have me that easy. I raised my arm, rammed my elbow into Trent's gut, and slammed my heel down on his foot. Startled, he loosened his grip. I broke away and raced through the desert, his howling and snarl- filled laughter echoing all around me.
âThereâs nowhere to run, Marked One!â
He was probably right, but I kept sprinting anyway. Out of nowhere I crashed into somethingâTrent! He had appeared in my path, his eyes black, his face scowling. He raised his hand in front of my face and formed a fist. Black mist wrapped around his fingers. He opened his hand and sent a stream of vapor at me. It struck me like a head-on collision. I flew through the air and landed flat on my back. Blood filled my mouth as I gasped for air.
Trentâs shoes thudded on the ground as he approached for more. I scraped together two handfuls of the gritty, red sand, ready to throw them in his face. He stood over me. He jerked my arm, and pulled me to my feet. A yelp shot out of me and tears blurred my vision.
Wrestling my arms away, I flung the sand at his face. Tavion stopped the particles mid- air with an open hand. When he lowered his hands, the tiny grains dropped to the ground. âStill a fighter,â he said with a smile. âSome things never change.â
I glanced at Janâs corpse. Her death was on me, but I guess it didnât matter since I was next. But where was my protector? My capture couldnât be that easy, could it? My mind called out to Farrell in desperation. Farrell! Where are you?
Crackling streaks of white lightning filled the air and shot across the red sky. âLooks like our friend is here,â Tavion said with a smile. âRight on time.â
Dazzling lightning filled the sky, streaming to the ground in a gold flash. I shielded my eyes until the brilliance faded. When I brought my hands down, I saw Farrell, and he looked pissed.
Tavion took hold of my arm and brought me closer. He stroked my hair as if I were his pet. He kissed the top of my head.
âRelease her,â Farrell said to Tavion.
âAs you wish,â Tavion replied.
He let go of my arm. Afraid to make sudden movement, I inched my way to Farrellâs outstretched hand. When our hands met, he pulled me behind him.
A deep menacing laugh erupted from Trentâs lips, a laughter that grew loud and forceful until it morphed into a hideous growl.
Farrell and I backed away. The
