Chapter 13
HALLDOR slammed his fist into the door of his house as soon as he’d closed it behind him. He didn’t know what was stronger: the anger at himself for being stupid enough to trust that Danny was different from his public image, and that he was just as willing as Halldor to explore the feelings between them; or the desperation that, yet again, he was clearly more involved with a potential lover than that man was interested in him.
Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!
Now his hand hurt. But he kept banging it against the door as he tried to get hold of himself. Pain was a great way to force himself to focus, and his hand seemed to be the best option. His only other choice was to use his head, but he didn’t want to risk real injury. He knew too much about the human brain and how easily it could be hurt.
He hadn’t been this close to tears since he was ten years old and had to say good-bye to his friends because his parents had decided they wanted to move to a foreign country. It may have been his mother’s birth country, and he’d previously flown there to visit his maternal grandparents, but it was hundreds of miles from everything and everyone he knew. It was away from Jonas’s grave. In retrospect, that was part of why his parents did it; they hadn’t wanted him to remain so fixated on his dead friend. Not that Halldor blamed them for trying, not anymore, but their effort had been pointless. He’d always remember Jonas. He wasn’t built for quickly changing loyalties, or forgetting the people close to him.
And, once more, that character trait had gotten him into deep trouble with Danny.
After the weekend started really well, with a fantastic visit to Danny’s gallery, the man’s admission that he was painting under a pseudonym, and their almost-sex on his office couch, it had all gone to hell really fast. One phone call from the hospital and he’d been out of commission, working his arse off to save lives until Sunday night. At which point he’d been too tired to do anything but fall into bed.
Monday had still been pretty hectic with aftercare and catching up with his other patients, and the news that his boss, Nancy, had suddenly decided to come with him to the project team meeting that evening had hit him hard. The woman had promptly taken over and he didn’t know what to do now. He really wanted to work on the project, but she was his boss. How the hell was he supposed to handle that?
He’d also looked forward to seeing Danny, maybe talking to him. He was pretty sure the man had left him a message, but he’d been too tired to think of checking his mobile on Sunday, and the battery had died on him when he switched it on Monday morning in the office. Of course, he kept his charger safely at home.
Then disaster hit.
