Chapter 5: Happy Halloween

When we arrive at the park, Mason finds a place to park, and we get out of the car. There are lots of people here already. The thing about this party is it’s open to everyone. There is something for all ages and even though it’s hosted by the local magic shop, you don’t need to be a practitioner to join the fun. There will be a Samhain ritual later that evening, but there are also traditional Halloween things to do like trick-or-treating for the kids and many small demonstrations and games. There will also be an enormous dance floor, and the party will extend well past dawn.

As we walk around to the back of the car, I help Mason finish his look. He dons the fur-covered gloves with clawed fingers. The mask is the final touch. It isn't a typical full head mask, just one that covers his face, but it's very reminiscent of the Beast. His eyes still show through, and his brown hair curls around the edges, giving him a somewhat wild look. He’s right. This is better.

We approach the gathering, and I immediately see Violet. Her purple and pink catsuit stands out among the other patrons, and her smile is as wide as the cat she’s portraying. She waves a hand at everyone entering, and she practically jumps for joy when she sees us.

“Happy Halloween! Goddess, you two look perfect!” she squeals.

“So do you, Violet. I love those ears. It’s so very you, and Happy Halloween!" I return, pulling her in for a hug.

“Hey, Vi. Love the costume,” Mason says, hugging her when I let go.

"Thanks. I love your choices. You outdid yourselves this year."

“Not too much?” I ask as I twirl in my dress.

“Not at all.”

“Vi, you aren’t going to be doing greeter duty all night, are you?” I ask.

“No. We’re switching out. Don’t worry. I’ll have plenty of time for fun tonight,” she responds.

Before we walk through the entrance, she pulls me in for a hug again, her lips near my ear.

“I’ve been here since we opened. I haven’t seen him yet. Don’t worry though. I’m sure he’ll be here.”

I try not to let a look cross my face. So what if he isn't here yet? I don’t care. I nod my head and take Mason’s hand as we walk through the glowing arch.

“Everything alright, Rowan? You look disappointed,” he asks.

“Oh, no everything is fine.”

“Your new friend isn’t here yet, is he?” Mason asks.

“Uh…”

“It’s alright. It’s early yet. That just gives me more time to talk you into it,” he teases.

“I…”

"Come on. Let's get you a drink, and then we'll see where the night leads."

He takes me over to the make-shift bar they've set up on the far side of the field. He orders me a drink and then leads me back towards the fun. The shop outdid themselves this year. Twinkle lights span over every surface. It seems so magical and perfect. I sip my drink and let the liquid fill my body with warmth.
