I stepped out of my tent, basking in the warmth of the morning sun. Before me stretched a deep valley, flanked by a river and the high ridges of the mountain range I called my own. As I slowly woke up to the day, I sniffed the air carefully, noting scents that carried news of other travelling packs. Usually I kept well clear of them if I could. A lone male without its pack was not welcome. This morning brought something more interesting to my inner wolf’s attention: the scent of a human.

In the past decade, their growth had steadily encroached upon the forests across the country, where we lycans ran in the brightest phases of the moon. Of course, if they had known that they had werewolves for neighbors , they might have thought twice, but I already know how that had gone for my ancestors. It wasn’t unusual to catch such a scent with the wind, but I was intrigued because this one was female.

Not many women undertook the famous trail that crossed our large country from end to end. As I began to pack up my tent, I idly wondered what sort of human she could be. I couldn’t tell how far off she was, and I hadn’t picked up her scent yesterday either. Now was not a good time to be encountering women. It was mating season, and the wolf within me was especially restless.

I didn’t carry much, just a small pack, and I was ready within minutes. I didn’t need to feed; yesterday nights hunting had taken care of that nicely. That was one benefit of shifting I suppose, there was never any real fear of starvation or injury. It’s just a shame that one couldn’t spend their whole lives as a wolf. They certainly seemed to have it easier. But I’d heard enough stories about those who shifted for too long, and soon found the lines between human and wolf fading away.

As the sun drew high in the sky, the wind shifted my way, and I got another whiff of the human female from the morning. She was definitely close, most likely only an hour or two up the trail. As I drew closer to her I could hear the sound of the river flowing, and the splashing of water. She was bathing. The realization sent desire surging through my body.

She was tall and athletic, with a bronzed summer tan. Her blonde was combed up into a high ponytail. Her face was bright and open. Seeing her for those few moments brought back a rush of longing. How long had it been since I’d had a mate?

I watched as she took off the rest of her clothes, alone in the wilderness. Her flannel top came off first, a quick tug over her head, arching up her back and revealing her generous breasts in profile.
