Chapter Twenty Nine

Chris stood on the bow of the ship, his eyes locked in on the flames leading them into the island. She had to be there.

After months in the frozen water, the captain had been true to his word and had navigated directly back to the place he’d seen the smoke before. As soon as they’d gotten close to the coordinates, he’d seen smoke once again, and the captain, despite the crew’s apprehensions, sailed them toward it.

They were close enough that the ship could go no further and they prepared the sloops to be lowered. Chris wasted no time in hurrying toward the first one.

“Wait!” Maria called after him, clutching his hand in hers. “What if it really is the Devil’s Islands? What if there are cannibals? Please, let the others go first.”

“I can’t. She’s there. I can feel it.” He pried his hand from her and climbed over the rail onto the sloop. “I have to get to her first. I have to warn her. It’s alright. I’ll be alright.”

She glared at him. “You stupid man! You don’t know what you’re going into. Do you not remember the captain’s stories?”

“She’s here,” Chris said, his hands shaking. “I can feel it.”

John quickly climbed over after him, taking a seat in the center of the sloop.

“Oye! Are you crazy! Both of you?!”

John held up his rifle. “No harm shall come to either of us, I assure you, my dear. The men on deck have been ordered to fire if I fire. The cannons are loaded and ready. If there is any cause for concern, our return shall be swift. I’ve no intention of being eaten today.”

“¡Idiotas estupidos!” She shouted, her hands balled into fists as the sloop was lowered down.

Chris scanned the vacant shoreline in the fading evening light, searching for any signs of her for the eternity it took the sloop to reach the water. “She’s got to be there.”

“We shall find her,” John assured him, standing to remove the ropes so the soldiers could begin rowing them toward land.

His sloop held twelve men. Each one of them was terrified as they grew nearer to the shore. Even John seemed apprehensive as they all sat silently watching the beach get closer.

“ALAINA!” Chris called, cupping his mouth with his hands as he stood and swayed with the movement of the boat. “ALAINAAAA!”

Movement. There was movement ahead of them and he shook. Suddenly, she became real. What if she came running toward him in that moment? What would they say to each other? Would she run into his arms and be relieved at the sight of him? After all that had happened, would he be relieved at the sight of her?

Up until that point, she’d been a mission… suddenly, she was reality. She could be right there in front of him. And what would that mean for the rest of their lives? Would they be able to fix all they’d broken?

Like water rushing through a dam, the beach flooded with people, native people running with long canoes over their heads.
