“Little by little you wonder and wonder, as fate becomes more bendable you lessen faith in words.”

11 Confrontation

By the time she and Ethan had gotten to the tree line, it was already dark. He walked as far as the bottom of the pathway without uttering another word to her. When he got to the path leading to the house, he stopped and turned around with a solemn expression on his face, as he walked toward the cabins. He never turned back to see if she had walked up the stairs or not. She watched him go to the cabin that was just two doors down from Jules, Huntyr, and Raine. Mary and An’Lana met him at the door and gave him a hug. They seemed so concerned for him as they ushered him inside. She turned back to the pathway and made her way inside the house, and up the stairs to the bedroom. She crawled into bed, exhausted emotionally and physically.

“Sleep, please come to me quickly,” she mumbled.

Her mind was restless, but she indeed found sleep. Restless as it was. She found herself dreaming of woods, and evil, and a boy who she wasn’t sure about. She tossed and turned as her mind flittered between the two boys who had captured her attention. Kyle and Ethan were vastly different. One cheerful and engaging, the other solemn and distant, yet there was something about them that had drawn her to them. Of course, that hadn’t ended well for Kyle. Her fists came down beside her as her eyes opened.

“One night, that’s all I ask.”

She groaned as she got out of bed and ran her hand through her thick hair. Now what was she supposed to do? She sighed and looked around the room. She reached for her medicine bag that was hanging on one of the bedposts. She pulled out the little pouch she used to close the entrances. She brought the pouch to her nose, smelling the sweet mixture of leather and sacred herbs. Medicine that thwarted evil. Medicine that kept people safe. She still had a lot in there, but would need to put more together when she got back to Georgia. There was no sense waiting until the last minute. She placed it back into the bag, and stood up, going to the dresser to fetch Ophelia’s journals.

“I really miss you,” she said softly, running her fingertips along the leather bound book.

She almost sat at the reading nook, but remembered her mom telling her to never sit near a window at night, that it draws spirits to you. She didn’t need any help in that department. Instead, she sat on the bed, with her back against the headboard and opened the journal. She had read through them many times. It helped her feel close to Ophelia. Oh, how she wished she were there with her right now. She continued to read for several hours, hoping it would tire her out, but it didn’t. A loud noise caught her attention.
