Almost two years ago…

There were times, over the years following our love affair, when Charles plagued my mind. Who says it's better to love than not at all? From the first day my eyes laid upon him, I was smitten by his looks. Light brown skin. Hazel eyes. A mixed breed. I chose the other scientist. The safer bet. The one that seemed uncomfortable in his skin. The one who turned out to be a lady-killer. A man whore of the highest caliber. Only providing me with a beautiful child and cold nights alone in a marriage bed. So, as Luxury grew, my eyes glanced everywhere but on the man who'd always showed me kindness. Then when Luxury was just a child, I was raped. This tragedy sent me to Charles’s arms.

I've asked God to forgive me but then I continued to feast on true love’s kiss. Even becoming lazy with my affections. See, Lux loved her Uncle Red too. He was more of a father than Jonah, the running man. While Jonah went on conferences and other business meetings, Luxury and I allowed Charles to slip into his spot.

For six years, we held strong. A secret love affair that ended in what Jonah thought would be his best friend’s death. My husband had set fire to Charles’s laboratory with him inside.

“Hello...” I answered the house phone. The call disconnected. I dialed back. It had been awhile since one of Jonah's whores were brazen enough to call our home. Lux had just returned home from NYU for good. I was ready to cuss a bitch out when Charles answered. In eight years, we hadn’t spoken directly to each other.

“Ch... Charles.” I sunk down onto the edge of my bed, hands gripping my middle.

“Yes,” he replied in a dry tone. Charles sighed, probably deciding not to hang up on me again. “I was calling for Luxxie. She and I were supposed to meet at Westgate for lunch. Tell her I’m waiting.”

“I... I think she may have forgotten. Aliyah was in a car accident last night.”

“Little Aliyah?”

Gripping my cell phone tighter, I tried not to smile while asking, “You remember her best friend?”

“Gina, I usually see Luxxie for lunch at least once every semester. She hasn't really assimilated into NYU. Besides, it isn’t as if she’s been that far away, either.”

“Oh.” I was baffled. My mind scoured back to the time that we searched high and low for Charles. Luxury was barely in middle school, I think. I’d gone mad after hearing about Charles almost dying in the fire. Over the years, I saw Charles just once. At Luxury’s middle school and high school graduations, a few school events in between allowed us to be in the same place. Yet, we hadn’t talked personally in years. We were like ex-spouses, there just to enjoy our mutual child’s highlights of life. Only, Luxury wasn’t Charles’s child. I collected my thoughts and said, “Well Lux was up all night taking care of Aliyah. It wasn’t that bad of a car accident.
