Chapter Fifty-One

Two years ago

I shouldn’t have come. This stupid prom isn’t my purview. There’s no reason why I should be here at all, other than the beautiful blonde in her red dress dancing with another guy.

I survived the damnable Raven Ball without throwing Violet on the nearest surface. What’s one more party in hell?

Violet is always gorgeous, but tonight, in a sea of well-dressed girls in gowns, it drives home just how hard it is for me to see anyone else at all while she’s here. My eyes immediately seek her, and remain focused on each of her smiles, each of her movements.

Charles’s running his hands all over her, more confident as the night progresses, and they have all the chemistry of a dead herring and a seagull: she looks so bored she’s likely to fall into a coma any day, while he’s ravenous. It’s almost as amazing as it is frustrating. Almost. Frustration wins, because part of me wants to be the one next to her. I’d make her laugh. It’s not hard—she has a great sense of humor. I’d make her smile. That’s pretty easy too; she just has to actually like someone to do it naturally.

And Violet likes me. I knew it at first glance.

Humans make everything complicated, but at the core, we’re still animals functioning on needs. Whatever pheromone or chemistry dictates whether we find someone appealing, we had it in spades, and every interaction from that moment has further proved our compatibility. Charles is an acquired taste. She could settle for him, and live a perfectly boring life, like so many people eventually do.

I want the fire. I want someone anchored in my soul. I want her, my flower, and no one else.

I watch Charles grow bolder yet, bringing her close and lowering his mouth to hers.

Nearby, his ex gasps. She isn’t the only one; they are stepsiblings, after all, and teenagers are easy to entertain.

Violet’s stiff in his hold, barely tolerating the kiss, not even returning it. Charles is trying to claim her publicly, thumping his chest loud and clear. I am not amused. Nor is Vi, but she’s not the kind of person to make a scene to humiliate the poor guy.

I’m not surprised to see Violet clear her throat and excuse herself, heading to the restroom as fast as her strappy heels can carry her. My eyes narrow when I watch Carol gesture to her two friends, before following after Violet.

Charles’s oblivious, joking around with his friends, who whistle and tease him. He’s beaming. In his narrow mind, he’s just made Violet his. He doesn’t realize he isn’t hers; his claim is completely one-sided.

I slide out of the corner where I sit, abandoning Camden mid-chess game.

“Hey, it’s your turn!” Roman protests.

He loves watching us play. We’re pretty evenly balanced; I’m more calculated, Camden, underhanded. By contrast, playing against Roman is like handling a puppy: we make it look like a fair fight to avoid crushing his ego.

“I yield,” I say.

It’s likely the first time in my life, so Roman’s rightfully outraged and shocked.
