The Pink Slip

I try not to read the hate mail slipped

into my locker between classes or after school,

letting them float into the recycle bin to be reconstituted

into something more useful. I try to ignore

the letters and texts. Reminders that I’m a slut,

a whore, a cheater, a boyfriend stealer,

a home wrecker. But this letter is different,

a folded pink slip with crooked handwriting

from a shaky hand holding a shaky

pen. You’re not a slut. I slide the note

into my binder for safe keeping.

I believe you.
