Chapter 13

After lunch, we paid our checks and reluctantly left the restaurant to rejoin the real world. Kristi had to go meet with the Chief of Police. I still had a half hour yet, and Ruby was in no rush to get back to “Mt. Laundry Pile” as she called it.

The two of us decided to walk to the little park nearby. I loved the park—so peaceful with its giant trees, their broad boughs full of whispering leaves. We strolled across a lawn that was so green it looked velvety.

“So, how are things going with Jake?” Ruby asked.

I groaned.

“What was that for? That doesn’t sound good.”

“No, it’s good. It’s just kind of been weird the last couple days.”

“Weird how?”

I opened my mouth, then paused, finally deciding to end it with a shrug. It just seemed ridiculous the more I thought about it. Was Jake really avoiding me this morning? And who cared about him getting his jacket, anyway? I was making a big deal out of nothing. He had to be just as stressed as everyone else at the hotel. More, even.

“It’s nothing, I don’t think. How about you? Are you seeing anyone?” I asked.

She smiled, a little secretive grin, which made my eyes widen. I nudged her shoulder. “What?” I prompted. “You holding out on me?”

“It’s no big deal. We just started dating,” she said. “His name is Peter. He’s charming and sweet, and holds the door open for me. However, he eats with his mouth open. It’s like watching someone eat after they just get back from the dentist.”

I snorted in laughter. “Wow! That’s quite the description! You sure you can handle that?”

She giggled too. “It’s the laws of the universe. You can’t have too much of a good thing without a little bad thrown in. You just have to decide if the cost is worth it.”

“And is it?” I asked.

She glanced down and that little smile returned. “I’ll let you know. I’m still tallying it up.”

Several men shouted from the basketball court up ahead. We glanced over at the sound of the ball dribbling hard on the pavement. A few more triumphant shouts accompanied the swish of the ball through the net.

We both stopped to watch the men play for a few moments. My eyebrows lifted when I realized that one of them was Sam Jenson, Brennan’s stunt double.

“Hit me!” he called to the guy tossing in the ball. The ball flew Sam’s way and he quickly spun around to dribble it down the court.

Sweat stained the back of his red tank into an ugly blood-red color. He zigzagged around one of the players and sideswiped another with a grunt.

“Hey! No arms!” someone yelled.

Spinning around, Sam leaped into the air, hoisting the ball into a shot.

It swished through the net. Sam smiled at the sight, flashing perfectly straight teeth. He high-fived his teammate.

“Five-minute break!” he called to the rest of the guys. There were a few groans but they all split off to their waiting water bottles and energy drinks.
