Chapter 12

The following morning shortly before Tucker left for the precinct, he told me he’d let me know if Stan managed to get the search warrant. Even though I was starting to doubt that whatever had gone on at the cabin had a bearing on Sheila’s death, I wasn’t about to rule it out until I had all the answers.

I sat at my desk, finishing up my notes from the prior night’s outing and waited for Tucker’s call. I had just emptied my second cup of coffee when my cell rang.

“Stan got it. I’m going with him.”

“The gate’s locked. How are you planning to enter the property?”

“When Stan talked to Hank Powers, the store owner, Powers said that Feister has a cleaning lady. She’s his cousin and has a key to the gate and cabin. She used to clean the place once a week, but she was told they were doing a little fix up and would call her when they were ready to have it cleaned again. Stan will inform Dr. Raymond Feister about the search when we reach the cabin.”

“Good. So even if he should have high-ranking friends in the police department, he won’t have time to stop the search before it’s underway. Since Feister wasn’t at the cabin that weekend, he might be completely in the dark as to whatever happened there.”

“That’s what I’m thinking, but as soon as he gets the call, he’ll be contacting his daughters.”

“It’s time for me to plant another bug.” After hanging up, I quickly dressed and then left for the hospital.

Twenty-minutes later, I walked down the hall toward the administration department. When I was about twenty feet from the door, I heard Georgina say, “I’m going to take a break. I’ll be back in fifteen minutes.”

I swung around and headed toward the lobby. Then I stopped and glanced over my shoulder. Georgina was walking the opposite direction. I back-tracked and hurried into the administration department. The double-door behind Georgina’s desk, which I figured led to Dr. Feister’s office, was ajar. As I moved toward it, a short, heavyset woman stood up from another desk and asked, “May I help you?”

“I have an appointment with Dr. Feister.”

She thumbed through some documents on the top of Georgina’s desk. “I don’t see his appointment book. He must have it in his office. Let me tell him you’re here. What is your name?”

“Sally Richards.”

She walked toward his office with me right behind her. The woman turned around. “Miss Richards, please have a seat. I’ll let you know when he’s ready to see you.”

“I’m on a tight schedule. I’ll only take a few minutes of his time.” I whisked by the woman and charged into Feister’s office. The woman was only a couple of steps behind me.

“What’s going on?” Feister asked, rising from his chair.

“Dr. Feister, I’m sorry,” she said. “I asked Miss Richards to wait so I could let you know she was here.”

As she spoke, I edged closer to him.

Feister’s attention turned to me. “Miss Richards, I don’t recall seeing your name on my appointment schedule.
