Evan Ellis leaned back in the chair in his home office, staring at the computer screen in front of him. He was uploading the newest version of the software that ran the email systems at the EazyGo corporate office, a place he barely ever visited. As he watched it load, he stood up from his desk and started to pace. His plan to get rid of Faith hadn’t gone exactly as he’d hoped. Ideally, the boat should have drifted out to sea. But it didn’t. Instead, he now had what looked to be two detectives trying to figure out what happened to Faith.

If that woman had minded her own business, none of this would’ve happened.

As Evan paced, he replayed the scene on the boat over and over again in his head. He’d told Faith he had papers he needed to give her and that he was at a friend’s boat club, asking her to meet him there. That part of his plan had been easy enough to achieve. She’d shown up without a care in the world, her wide smile practically jeering at him, as if she was daring him to do something.

And he did…

It was a simple enough ruse — he’d scoped out the Summer Wind a few days before, noticing that the owner of the boat left the keys in the engine. As he walked up and down the dock, he’d seen that many of the boat owners did the same. A man passed him on the dock and Evan asked about it. “Hey, my friend asked me to check on his boat. He left the keys in the ignition. You think I should pull them?”

The man, with a shock of gray hair and a matching thick gray beard carrying a six-pack of beer towards his boat, shook his head. “I wouldn’t. We all leave our keys on our boats in case they start to sink and we gotta get them out of the water fast.” He waved Evan off. “Just leave them. It’ll be fine. Nobody ever has an issue with anyone taking their boats around here.”

Evan plastered a smile on his face. “Okay, thanks.” Taking a boat would be child’s play if the keys were in it. Was no one concerned about their boat getting stolen?

Evan checked the screen again. The email updates were loading more slowly than he expected. He started pacing again, clenching and unclenching his fists as he did. He remembered texting Faith that they should go take a boat ride. Tristan didn’t seem to realize how often Evan and Faith communicated about work. Faith seemed excited, met him at the marina, and more than willingly hopped on board, chattering away the entire time about how her dad only had a small fishing boat when she was a kid and that she’d always wanted to go out on the bay more, but never did. “It’s like a dream come true!” she chirped as they pulled away from the dock. Evan had attached a
