TWENTY-FIVE

Bryce Brogan had wakened Josh with the news that Anderson Walsh had been made by Pinky Leclerc. Not only had Leclerc spotted Walsh, he’d chased him off with a pistol. Bryce was flinching with poorly retrained anticipation, keen to get to Cumberland Avenue and have things out with Po Villere’s sniper. It took some convincing him not to rush in but Josh finally got through to him.

He hadn’t expected to sleep, but exhaustion had taken him. Josh, foggy-headed and aching from having lain in the back of the van, had to get his act in order before Bryce followed his initiative and possibly blew everything.

First, Josh had the two locals pull off their stakeout of Villere’s home to take over surveillance on Pinky’s apartment. If Pinky had made Walsh it might press him into some kind of action they could capitalize on: no sooner had the two locals gotten set up than Pinky left home in his SUV. Pinky was alert to the vehicles he’d become familiar with – the blue van and now Randall’s car – but the locals were using their own cars. They followed him to Falmouth, keeping well back while he picked up another guy from a big old house on the sea front. The locals shadowed Pinky and his new friend out of the city and up the coast, taking turns to follow so as not to alert them. In the meantime the Brogan brothers mobilized the others in their team. Walsh was sent after the locals, adding to the convoy on Pinky’s tail, because Josh was convinced that they were answering a summons from Villere, and he had reason to believe that the Cajun had possibly found Vaughan. It was speculation, but why else would there be maneuvers underway so soon after Pinky spotted Walsh?

Elvin Collins gave them access to a van and pickup truck. The fourth man drafted in by Randall was called Eamon White; he was instructed to follow in the blue van while the Brogans each took one of Collins’ vehicles, Collins sitting shotgun alongside Josh in the company van, while Randall accompanied his brother in the pickup. Together, they had a rolling convoy of six vans and cars on the road, an ample force to tighten a noose around him wherever Pinky led. Josh coordinated the team over walkie-talkies he’d had the presence of mind to supply them with. The radios were set to a dedicated channel, but there was always the possibility of eavesdroppers. Then again half of what Bryce said over the airwaves would sound like the ramblings of a maniac. He sounded nuts at the best of times, but over the radio it was as if he’d found a new pulpit for his weirdness.

Pinky dragged them up through Yarmouth, and then further north into terrain unfamiliar to Josh. Collins told him that they would soon reach Freeport, a town whose name meant nothing to Brogan. After Freeport, Collins went on, Pinky could forge on towards Augusta or to Brunswick.
