Chloe entered Peter’s sleek modern condo. It was part of the new development at Wild Summit Peaks and it was stunning. A lot of money had been put into the ski resort over the last while, so much so that Chloe had noticed the difference even in the short time she’d been living in Wild Summit. Polished concrete countertops, a kitchen that looked like it had been pulled from the pages of a design magazine, the crib was off the hook.

“You been here long?” Chloe asked.

“Just bought the place.”

“So have you got room for your new car?”

“It’s in the garage. To be honest, I like the car, but I haven’t had a chance to look at it since I bought it.”

“Cause you’re always riding around on that motorcycle.”

“Maybe. Summertime and all.”

“So, you got me to your place,” Chloe said with a smile. “What exactly do you have planned?”

Peter gestured up the stairs. Chloe liked where this was going. But she didn’t like the change she had noticed in Peter’s voice. When she had mentioned the car, she had noticed a slight tremor in his voice. A reluctance. Like he didn’t want to talk about it. Strange. It was as though Peter had something to say to her but was holding back. Why would he do that? Had those bastards stolen the car already? They were at least supposed to leave some time between the sale and the theft. Just the thought of Ivan and his cohorts angered Chloe. What was she going to have to do to get them to leave her alone?

Chloe climbed the stairs. She had both her heels now, which made it easier to walk, even to put a little sass into her stride. She liked Peter. She liked him a lot. She hoped she could find a way to deal with her problem. Maybe she was overthinking things. The tremor in Peter’s voice aside, things were looking up. Chloe’s breath was taken away when she reached the top of the stairs.

“Oh, Peter.”

It was the most exquisite sight she had ever seen. She walked out the open double doors onto an expansive roof deck complete with lounge chairs and a sparkling blue swimming pool. Lotus flowers floated in the pool, a candle in each of them subtly lighting the dark night. A telescope was positioned in the middle of the deck, looking out onto the heavens. It was beautiful.

“So what exactly did you have in mind?” Chloe asked.

Peter wrapped his arms around her from behind. Just his touch and she felt her skin tingle. He was magical like that. He transformed her.

“I thought we could start with a little stargazing,” Peter said.

“And then?”

“Maybe a little navel gazing?”

Chloe laughed. “The whole thing. It’s beautiful,” she said.

“I wanted our second date to be special.”

Chloe took Peter’s hand and they walked over to the telescope, admiring the towering mountains, moonlight gleaming down. She peered through the eyepiece, getting a full view of the craters on the moon.

“Listen, Chloe,” Peter said.

“I’m listening.
