Jeremy rolled down the garage door to give them some privacy, letting the evening light filter in through the upper windows. He knew he needed to tell Bailey the truth. That he had been a wheelman for the Petronis, that he had worked for them many times, that their sudden appearance probably had nothing to do with her and everything to do with him. But he also knew that if he told her those things, it would be too much. She would leave and he wouldn’t blame her. But he couldn’t let her leave. Because she was the one. He felt in his bones that she was his mate, and if he had time, just a little time, he could set everything right and make it so the Petronis would never bother her again. But he needed that time. Only a few days. So he lied. A little white lie to make everything better.

“I don’t know the Petronis personally,” Jeremy said. “But as soon as I saw them arrive, it was pretty clear you did.”

“I thought you said you’d had contact with them,” Bailey said.

“Growing up on the South Side, everybody had contact with the Petronis. We saw their enforcers around. That’s why I drove up to the back door of your shop. Anywhere those guys are is trouble.”

“Well, you’re right about that,” Bailey said. “But it’s too much of a coincidence. Why did they show up as soon as you did?”

“Honestly?” Jeremy asked.

“Yes. Honestly.”

“Honestly, I don’t know.” Which was the truth. Jeremy didn’t know why they had decided to show up when a phone call would have sufficed. “So why are they looking for you?” Jeremy asked.

Bailey looked away. “I have something. Something that belongs to them. That’s why I need to go.”

Bailey grabbed hold of the chain that held down the door. Jeremy knew that she was afraid. He couldn’t let her go like that. Not the woman who he knew to be his mate. He approached her from behind and wrapped his arms around her, already self-conscious at the hardening of his cock. It sent the wrong message. This was about much more than sex. But even as he touched her, Jeremy reveled in Bailey’s warm flesh. Not only did she have a beautiful way about her, but she was warm and curvy. He had no doubt she would bear fine cubs. “You can’t promise that,” Bailey said.

“Yes, I can.”

“How?”

“And?”

“A bear always keeps his word. Always,” he whispered into her ear.
