Chapter 14
An ophthalmologist invents a device that will allow patients to see into other people’s minds, receiving a colorful and sometimes shocking series of images. At first, the patients think of DR. MILLER as a hero, but soon their new abilities start to make them insane…and violent. Can the doctor undo what he’s done before it’s too late?

At five in the morning, his phone rang and Samson jerked awake, fumbling with the items on his nightstand. The Cedarville area code chilled him. Nobody ever called before dawn with good news. He switched on a lamp, rubbing his eyes. When he answered, his voice was hoarse from lack of sleep and too many cigarettes.
“I’ll call back.”
Brigit’s voice surprised and then warmed him. He was suddenly alert to being alone and almost naked in a seedy motel room. Company sounded nice, even a thousand miles away.
“No, please. I’m awake.”
“I don’t know any folks out there. I forgot about the time change.”
Samson sat up slowly and leaned back against the wall, stretching his legs out in front of him. The room was warm and smelled faintly of mildew, the ancient A/C making noise and condensation but not cooling the small area much. The donut shop hadn’t opened yet, and his room was mostly dark. He pictured Brigit in her small but clean kitchen, dogs at her feet, and felt a pang of homesickness.
“I’m glad you called. Everything all right? River all right?”
“River’s a right mess, but that’s not why I’m calling.”
Samson closed his eyes, thinking about her thick hair. He could bury his hands in it, pull her toward him. He should have done that when he had the chance. But her voice had something he didn’t recognize, and he reminded himself that she might not welcome his fantasy version of her. He wedged the phone between his ear and shoulder, rubbing his eyes again to wake up. He’d felt better. His mind had been occupied with his quest—or fool’s errand—but he’d more than neglected his body.
“I’m listening,” he said when it seemed like she was waiting for encouragement.
“It might be nothing, but I picked up your mail yesterday, and there’s a letter.”
Samson smiled, moving to the side of the bed so that he could find his pants and the last of the smokes. He’d already promised himself he wouldn’t buy another pack. He could talk all morning about the mail with Brigit, if that’s what she wanted.
“Sure, I don’t have a lot of friends, but a letter don’t seem so bad.”
The long pause punctuated Samson’s first good news in days.
“The return address is the Lace house. I thought it was at first, but I wanted to double-check before bothering you. I drove by, and it’s the same address.” Brigit spoke quickly, the words spilling into one another. “53 Chritton.”
“You went there?” The thought of Brigit anywhere near that house made his pulse speed up. There was something wrong about the place.
