We hadn’t seen much of Hensley and Ernie since we got to Cape Cod. They stopped by or sent one of us a text message to let us know where they were or what they were doing, but either they were having their own romantic holiday, or they believed shoving Jude and me together was the solution to our problems. I never would have thought it would work, yet it had—maybe too well.

In the two days we’d been here, we’d eaten dinner with them and that was about it. And even then, there were stolen touches and secretive glances. My mom was clearly proud of herself and her plan for forced isolation, although she didn’t realize what those secretive glances between Jude and me actually meant. She had no idea the two of us were playing tonsil hockey in the room, or holding hands on the beach, or kissing when no one was watching.

Jude and I hadn’t talked about what was going on between us. We just let it happen on its own accord, and it was better than anything I’d ever experienced. He was safe—his arms, how close we were, there were no secrets. I’d never had that level of security with anyone in my life other than Jude, and it had been that way since we were kids. Adding in the physical and romantic part only added to the depth of the love I’d had for him for years. And without saying it, there was no doubt he felt the same.

When we finished dinner, Ernie and Hensley excused themselves for the evening, and Jude and I did the same. It was too cold to walk on the beach at night, and we weren’t old enough to do much of anything else. Without a television in the room, we were left with books, music, and iPads.

This was the part of the day that became stilted.

Where Jude and I frequently shared a bed in the past, that was now a huge step, even fully clothed. And when my mind started wandering—and wanting—to do the first without the second, I worried about how far the two of us might let this go. Just as quickly as the worry came, his touch would soothe it away and replace it with comfort.

“Why are you all the way over there?” I peered through my lashes from my spot on my bed.

He held up a book. “Reading.” There was no way he was that daft. “Why are you all the way over there?” His eyes sparkled with innuendo, and the corner of his mouth lifted into the most adorable smirk.

I wanted to throw myself across the room as quickly as possible, but I had to maintain some semblance of dignity. Then, once I got there, I wasn’t sure what to do with myself. Typically, I’d lie down on his right—on my side—and bug the crap out of him until he put the book down and paid attention to me. But that was when we weren’t doing…whatever this was.
