Chapter 23

Danny lay in bed, straining to hear any sound from the room next door. Still nothing. Evan had left before breakfast without a word. He understood Evan’s need for space, he really did. That’s why he hadn’t phoned, figuring a respite might be needed after all the drama of the previous day. But Danny had felt a sliver of unease twisting deeper into him as the day turned to night, and still no sign of his fiancé.

The chime of his cell phone just after three A.M. brought him bolt upright, muscles tensed. He answered, and moments later was breathing his deep relief. It was the security officer calling Danny to warn him a taxi carrying a very inebriated Evan was on its way to the back door. Grinning, he pulled on some sweats, stuffed a hundred dollar bill in his pocket and went down to accept delivery of his wayward fiancé. When the cab pulled up, Danny went out to meet it.

Evan was sprawled across the back seat. When Danny opened the cab door, Evan looked up, trying hard to focus, and grinned. “Hi, honey, I’m home.” Then he dissolved into howls of laughter, rendering himself almost boneless as Danny struggled to haul him out of the cab.

The driver came around and helped drag the helpless drunk upright. “That’ll be fifty bucks, Sir.”

Danny shoved the hundred dollar bill at the cabbie. “Keep the change. And thank you for getting him back here safely.”

The driver’s eyebrows raised as he looked at the bill. “Anytime, Sir. Have a nice night.”

Danny managed to push, pull and drag Evan up the stairs and into his bedroom. “You know, this is becoming a habit.”

Evan leered up at Danny. “Are you gonna give me another special shower like last time? Cause I liked that.”

“Not tonight, although you could use one. You reek of whiskey. I thought you were a wine drinker.”

“Me? Oh, no, no, no, Sir. Only good Irish whiskey for a true Dwyer. Heir to the throne, don’t you know? Hey, we’re both crown princes, let’s have a ball.”

Danny looked at Evan in confusion.

The weaving man snickered at Danny’s expression, “No, not that, you shameless hussy—a grand ball with an orchestra and dancing and bowing and dancing. Just like Cinderella.” He tried to twirl around, his arms thrown wide.

Danny ducked under Evan’s arms and tackled him onto the bed.

“Oh! So you do want a ball after all.”

Danny ignored him and, despite Evan’s unwelcome assistance, managed to strip him down to his boxers. “Do you need the bathroom?”

Evan giggled. “Nope. I used the one in the cab.”

Danny rolled his eyes and tucked his helpless fiancé in between the sheets. He filled the bathroom glass and pulled Evan upright enough to drink. “Drink it all. You’re dehydrated.” Once Evan had complied, Danny let him slide back down and went to refill the glass. Setting it down on the nightstand, he said, “There’s more water here. Is there anything you need?”

Evan looked up through heavy-lidded eyes. “Maybe a fairy godmother to turn back time?”

“Sorry.
