Amelia

We’re on the plane on our way back to New York. Killian, Hunter, Dwayne, and I are flying with Neal while Vincenzo took a few of his men with him on his plane. To say that tensions are high and palpable would be an understatement. Killian and Hunter are arguing about something in one corner, sipping scotch and scowling at each other, while Dwayne is on his phone in the other. He keeps glancing my way, only to look back at his phone when I look up. Neal doesn’t take his eyes off me for one minute, and he hasn’t done so ever since our conversation in the elevator, which I’m sure he wants to finish. That was a conversation I definitely was not expecting. In all my life, I’ve never been this close to possibly getting everything I’ve ever wanted.

And I hate it.

Neal and Vincenzo made sure we had immediate transport to the airport so we could head back to New York as soon as possible. They barely gave us enough time to pack and change before we had to board. At least I’m out of my red dress, which I left in Vegas in Christiano’s room, glad to be rid of it. Clad in my skinny jeans and hoodie, uneasiness and tension still claw at my stomach despite wearing my comfort clothes. Because the words he last spoke to me, Neal’s declaration of wanting to be with me and only me, is still ringing in my head.

Looking at him now, with his intense green eyes not leaving mine, his dark hair ruffled from running his hand through it repeatedly in frustration, I can still see him standing in front of me, begging me to give him a chance to prove he wants me. That he chooses me.

Every part of my being wants to believe him. Everything in me wants to jump into his arms and tell him that I will be his forever. But I can’t let myself. It would be selfish of me to allow him to give up his loyalty to his Family for me. His love for his Family will always be a part of him, and if he ever feels like he lost his way of life because he chose me, resentment will sink in, poisoning what we have.

Not to mention the fact that his fiancée just lost her father. I do not want to put him in the position of telling her that she not only lost her father, but also her… Whatever she feels she has in Neal. I’ve never spoken to him about Arica because I just couldn’t bring myself to hear about his upcoming marriage. It hurts enough to see them together, to know that she is free to love him and I am not. Now, I wish I had a better idea of what was really going on between the two of them.

“Amelia.” Neal’s voice is low and urgent, pulling me out of my spiral of self-destruction.

“Can we have a word in private?” He gets up, not waiting for me to give him an answer.
