Ana wasn’t entirely convinced that Sebastijan’s operation had been successful, so she decided to employ as well the classic method of increasing environmental pressures. If she wanted to regulate aversion to the unacceptable behavior with any precision, she would need someone from the boy’s immediate surroundings. Sebastijan’s older brother, Marko, was in his first year of high school, and Ana thought he was mature enough to learn about the nature of the world. The strongly expressed machismo in Marko’s peer environment was a good indicator that he would be suitable for the task she had chosen him for. As liberalism grew in the society, so too did intolerance in the school environment, and it received support from the young female schoolteachers—intolerance toward everything that’s worse than we are, so the more intolerant we are, the better we become: hatred of queers as pure disgust at the very idea of someone sticking it up an asshole; intolerance toward Albanians and Bosnians, though many of the students were themselves the children of people who had moved here from other parts of the former Yugoslavia; toward druggies, even though after school they’d all smoke pot behind the walls of derelict factories; toward drunks, even though on the weekends they’d compete to see who’d be the first to down fifteen beers; toward poor people, who were just trying to make them feel guilty; toward rich people, who were robbing them blind so they couldn’t buy a decent set of wheels; toward car sluts, who put out just for the money; toward muscle boys, who got all the hot chicks by showing off; toward ugly women, who acted like they didn’t know they were ugly; toward their parents, who were clueless and always on their back about something; toward old people, who smelled bad. Marko was just rebellious enough to collaborate in her top-secret project—it was the kind of secret a Christian would not divulge even to his confessor, not even on his deathbed. Marko would introduce the stigmatization of the deviant behavior into the environment of the brother who looked up to him. The younger boy would not have the ability, or the courage, to put up any resistance, and would have to accept the dominant identification. Marko would also be useful in her analysis of Adam. Many things can be said by the mouths of children that would be inappropriate coming from an adult. Childish candor would excuse many of the questions and responses that were important for her analysis. How did Adam feel toward her? She would kill three birds with one stone. Marko would learn what society expected of him. If he were ever tempted to sample how queers stick it in, he would know this was something he had to hide. What we don’t admit to does not exist.

Marko started behaving toward Sebastijan like a ringleader who demands total obedience, no questions asked. With his father, he was constantly getting into verbal sparring matches triggered by the provocative comments and
