Chapter 20
The discussion back in the car was lively to say the least. Everyone was voicing an opinion except for Justine, who was trying to piece together just what had gone on. She drove and analysed putting bits of the jigsaw together. She, as a female, could do more than one thing at a time. The traffic as they entered St Kilda Rd was thick and slow moving as usual at that time of day. Her part of the jigsaw was going to come under some scrutiny she was sure when Andrew found time to speak to her alone. The look as he entered the car was a thousand times more severe than the one that she received to make her exit from the house. This could be two strikes and out but what else was she to do in that situation? She was sure Andrew was going to tell her a million and one other things she could have done.
She snapped back to more attentive listening when Sarge asked her a question, âJustine, you knew Chloe better than any of us. We made a mistake by not asking the McShanes whether they had seen Michael in the previous five weeks since the body turned up. It should have been one of the first things we asked. She queried it briefly and then moved on. Do you think she dismissed our lack of questioning?â
âSarge, I hate to say it but I am pretty sure that she rumbled you and then stored that away for future use. She has a steel trap mind and I have seen her trip lecturers at Uni up because they have made even more complicated errors of judgement. She would have decided then and there that you already knew that the body belonged to Michael; not just suspected but knew. She would have been wondering how or who confirmed it and then why we had come on a fishing expedition or were seeking formal ID-ing of the body. She doesnât miss much. Did she throw up any objections to the DNA requests? That would have been the most obvious thing to do.â
âIn fact she didnât. She even offered to get us to take them then and there and fingerprints as well.â It was Andrew who answered the question.
âThat means she knows that we already have DNA samples and that we have fingerprints probably too. Sheâd know weâd have Marcusâs legally but figured that we had somehow obtained everyone elseâs. My suggestion is that we do something about protecting her doctor. She will have put two and two together faster than any calculator and I think her doctor could pay a price. Look all this probably went awry when I made that comment about the photo. I somehow had to grab her attention and I figured that one of you would have already discussed the photo anyway. It seemed pretty obvious. Iâm sorry that things went downhill after that. I was glad to hear that Mrs McShane was ok.
