“Once in a while I try to run interference between George and Fay,” he told her, “but that's about it. Besides, Fay prefers that I mind my own business. Take my advice, Ari. Let your sister deal with your grandfather in her own way.”

There were times when Fay did so quite effectively, he thought. She'd waged a battle royal with George on the subject of contacting Ari. If she was content most of the time to smooth things over and let George run the show, Clay couldn't think any less of her for that. A grim smile settled over his features as he suddenly remembered something his mother had said a few years ago. It had been shortly after Clay's father filed for divorce. Lila had come by, full of sympathy. When she'd left, Clay's mother had remarked that there went one of those rare women who'd be lucky if her husband did divorce her. Clay had thought at the time that his mother was exaggerating. He'd changed his mind tonight.

“I don't have Fay's patience,” Ari lamented as she sipped her juice. “If it weren't for the fact that Shanna seems to like Lila so much, I'd pack and go home tonight.”

Rotating her shoulders, then her head, Ari tried to work out some of the kinks she'd acquired during the long, tiring day. Renewed desire shot through Clay, propelling him across the space between sofa and love seat before he had time to think better of the impulse.

“Move over and turn around.” Hands on her shoulders, he positioned her the way he wanted her. “Fortunately for you, Ms. Palmer, I'm a world champion in the category of Olympic neck rub.”
