CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

It was dark when the family walked out of Tops Supermarket with a cart full of groceries. Chris had given them a good start, but they needed more to carry on. Joe volunteered to cook tonight so they could have something different than pasta. He was going to make a bourbon beef flavored roast with his signature mashed potatoes and a salad plus garlic bread. Naturally, this meant that he needed to buy a bottle of Jim beam. Tommy had also gotten a few toys as well. They thought about buying a Christmas tree and decorations but decided to hold off for now as Joe had hope that maybe they would spend that holiday in their own house. He offered to go back home to pick up a few things, but Kelly was against it. She did not want to risk the possibility that he would be followed.

“So that’s not the same thing as an L.O.L. Surprise?” Faye inquired to her grandson. She had enough trouble keeping up with what new toys were what when Joe was Tommy’s age.

“L.O.L. Surprises are for girls,” Tommy said with indignation, assuming that he was being teased.

“Well, sorry, I didn’t know,” Faye replied in a mocking tone, this time really teasing him.

They arrived at the car. Joe opened the back and started loading the groceries in. Next to them, on Main Street, the Christmas lights started to turn on. It made the small town look like it was straight out of a wholesome TV movie. Kelly noticed them and stared with a slight smile, something she hadn’t done in more than a week.

“Look, Tommy,” Kelly said with glee as she pointed toward the street. Everyone turned to look.

“They’re beautiful,” Faye commented.

“Wow. Can we have Christmas lights too, Dad?”

“We’ll see,” Joe responded. He saw that Kelly appeared mesmerized. A beautiful surprise after a long, dark nightmare. “You want to take a walk and look at them?”

Kelly turned to him and considered the offer.

“It might take a whole twenty minutes, plus it’s dark so no one will recognize you.” He took off his cap and put it on her head. “Now you’re in disguise.”

Kelly smiled. Joe offered his hand for her to hold, and she took it.

A couple of minutes later, Tommy and Faye were walking ahead of Joe and Kelly. Joe considered that maybe some of the Christmas magic was what the doctor ordered. The small shops were all open, and the streets were slightly crowded. This was a special time of the year that no one wanted to miss.

She seemed to really be enjoying the atmosphere, he thought. He wasn’t sure what to say or if he should say anything. This was a nice moment, and he didn’t want to ruin it.

“I’m sorry if I’ve been distant,” Kelly said.

“It’s okay. Whenever you remember something or want to talk. I’ll be here,” he responded, trying to be the loving and supportive husband that he knew he needed to be.

She smiled and grabbed his arm to pull herself closer to him.
