Rain
By the time Maggieâs done looking over the proposal for her new small business and the list of all the various small business loans and grants I have put together all the confidence I was feeling from earlier is gone and Iâm a nervous wreck. I think Iâve chewed all the red off my lower lip when she finally sits back and lifts a brow at me.
âAnd youâd give me the first six months of rent for free?â
I nod slowly. âYeah, if I get the building for my offer price, I would. Statistics show that twenty percent of small businesses fail within the first year so not having that overhead would give you a boost at making it work.â
She breathes deeply, leans forward, and taps at one of the lines of the start-up budget.
âI can tell you right now, your numbers are off, right here.â
I look down and see her pointing at the renovation costs and frown. I did a thorough dive into what every detail of this budget would be. When I look up to dispute that, she canât contain her grin and butterflies take flight in my stomach.
âIt will be a hell of a lot cheaper because Hett wouldnât dare charge his future wife for labor!â
I sink back into my seat and lift a hand to press against my lips, mumbling around it, âYouâre in?â
Her smile almost blinds me when she says, âYou bet your sweet ass Iâm in!â It quickly morphs into a deep frown. âBut we need to talk about the name. Maggieâs Café is not going to be the name.â
I canât help but start laughing. If the bank accepts the offer, then Iâm going to be a business owner right next to my best friend. I have no interest in being in the food service industry but it seemed like such a natural fit for Maggie with her love of coffee and food. I was prepared to do my own thing but I wanted, hoped, she would jump at the chance to not only broaden her dreams a little but also give this town an infusion of new options.
The money my dad left me from selling his land combined with what I have in my savings account will give me a solid buffer to live on after the purchase and start-up costs and Iâll still be able to keep bringing income in with my remote accounting clients. But even if he hadnât of left me that money, I know I would have found a way to make this happen. And it will be mine. Mine to succeed or fail with. Iâm going to open a store thatâs a combination of city and country. Clothing and home décor and itâs going to be connected to my best friendâs café.
Rain Rawlins - boutique owner and landlord. Thatâs who Iâm going to be, not the Kingstonâs girl, not Jasonâs fiancée.
Almost as if my thoughts conjured one of them, Chase steps into the diner and strides to the counter. He does a quick scan of the tables and stumbles a step when he spots me.
