CHAPTER

TWENTY-EIGHT

We needed to get to a private airport where Luca had sent his jet. The location was a three-hour drive away, and I only gave myself an hour to get ready and leave the house. I had showered and blown out my hair last night, so I just needed to put on some makeup and comfy clothes. Molly arrived just as our car pulled up to the house.

“I love how fabulous you look without even trying,” Molly said. Her hair was up in a messy bun.

“I’m in yoga pants and a T-shirt, just like you.”

“Right, but you still look put together. Plus, those fancy shades tie it all together.”

“Didn’t I give you a raise?” I laughed. “You can buy these, too.”

Molly laughed. “I’ll just put them on my Christmas list.”

We napped during the car ride and were woken up by someone knocking on the window. A huge plane was waiting for us, with Neil standing at the stairs.

“Aria,” he said with a big smile.

“Neil,” I replied, returning the smile. “Will you be joining us?”

“Yes, my nephew asked me to escort you and your assistant.”

“Luca is your nephew?”

“Yes, he is.”

There seemed to be a pattern of keeping things in the family. We got onto the plane, and I could feel Molly holding back her excitement.

“Looks like Mr. DeCarlo is going to spoil us.”

“I’ll never be able to fly on a regular plane after this,” Molly said. She was in awe, to say the least, causing Neil and me to smile at her reaction.

“Sit,” Neil gestured.

Once we settled in, Neil took the seat next to mine.

“Looking forward to seeing your family?” I asked.

“I am.” Neil smiled. “My wife has decided to stay behind this time. I think she’s giving California her final goodbyes.”

“Goodbyes?”

“I’ve been in California conducting business for the family, and now I’m looking to retire. And I’d like to live the last years of my life in the city I grew up in.”

“How many siblings do you have?”

“Just one sister, Nicoletta. Luca’s mother.”

“Who will take your place on the West Coast?”

“There’s always someone.” Neil smiled.

Neil let us rest most of the plane ride as he read the newspaper. We landed smoothly and were greeted by Alfie with an Escalade. Glancing at Molly, I could see she was blushing when Alfie gave her a wink.

“How was the flight?” Alfie asked me.

“Smooth.”

“Good.” Alfie smiled. “Neil, are you staying a few days?”

“Just the weekend,” Neil said as he helped Alfie put our luggage into the car.

Alfie took us to the Lagos, one of Chicago’s exclusive hotels. There we found both Kevin and Gio waiting for us.

“And the fun has arrived,” Gio greeted me, smiling.

“What’s the plan?”

“I figured we should grab food.”

“I’m starving,” Molly said, grabbing her stomach. When Gio shot her a look, she seemed to shrink.

“Don’t mind him, Molly,” I cut in. Gio wasn’t used to people commenting unless he was speaking to them directly. I pat Gio on the chest. “You’re treating Molly and me all weekend.”

“Anything you guys want,” Gio replied, understanding that Molly wasn’t an outsider, at least not to me.
