Chapter 9

THE FIVE OF US STOOD in a line, staring silently at the door. The plan was set, the clock was ticking. The only thing left was to take those first fledgling steps.

...which none of us could seem to do.

“This shouldn’t be hard,” Zadie whispered suddenly. “There’s already no going back, since the crown prince is moldering on the bathroom floor.” Her eyes flashed to me. “...no offense.”

I flinched in spite of myself, keeping my eyes on the door. Standing beside me Matthew’s lips were fluttering, triple-checking a mental list just as he’d done a thousand times before.

“We’re ready,” he said to himself. “Everything’s ready.”

Again, I kept quiet—fidgeting uncomfortably in my dress. After a few awkward seconds, Remy glanced over with the trace of a grin as Will leaned down to murmured in my ear.

“Are you having a fit or something?”

I shook him loose, scowling at the folds of shimmering silk. “No, I just...I can’t believe this is finally happening. We’re finally walking out that door, finally burning this place to the ground behind us...and I’m wearing this.”

For the first time the others found the humor, laughing quietly as Will gazed down with that twinkling smile. “It’s your wedding, Elise. It would be a shame if you never got to wear it.”

Matthew held up a hand, the only one who’d kept quiet. He glanced one final time at the clock, almost as if he was counting something, then tilted his head towards the door.

“Let’s go.”

Will ghosted to the window, slipping onto the ledge as the curtains fluttered back into place, hiding him from sight. The second he was gone, the four of us walked outside.

We left the water running.

Matthew was the first to leave, splitting off in the opposite direction with a polite nod of his head. The guards didn’t notice him. No one ever noticed the servants.

Zadie and I exited with a bit more flair.

“I cannot believe this!” I cried, barreling obliviously past the men who were supposed to be guarding me. “We have less than an hour, Zadie! Far less! You said this would be easy!”

She hovered beside me like a nervous shadow, constantly wringing her hands. “I’m sorry, I thought it would!” she exclaimed, tripping over a guard’s heavy boot as she struggled to keep pace. “But Rowan’s drawing—”

“Rowan is a saint!” I interrupted, whirling around to jab a finger into her chest. “You leave him out of this. Just because you’re incapable of doing what he could so easily have done himself!”

Remy walked a step behind us, wearily rubbing his eyes.

“Ladies, please, If you could just calm down—”

Crack!

She slapped him right across the face.

“Stay out of this, Remy!”

His lips parted in genuine shock. I grimaced apologetically behind her.

A career on stage? She was already the star of her own little show.

A throat cleared quietly, one of the guards.

“I’m sorry, milady. Is there a problem?”

Sorry? He truly did look it. Both men had been smiling until Remy got slapped across the face. Now they were regarding us
