Was she really going to tell him everything?

Ana licked her lips. She’d already cried in front of him. There was no one she had done that in the presence of since she’d been a child. It was now or never. “You know how I retrieve things for hire? Well, I used to, as in past tense. After what happened with you…what I thought happened to you…I did a couple of jobs afterward, but then I quit. I just wanted a quiet life.”

Rhys nodded understandingly. “So what prompted the return?”

Her stomach flipped. “In my job, I work with people. Some good. Some not so much. One decided that I was the only one who could get a diamond he desperately wanted, so he made sure I couldn’t say no.”

Again, another nod. Rhys seemed so interested in hearing what she had to say she felt bad that all she cared about was her interest in the diamond.

“What about you? What’s your fascination with it?”

Rhys looked somewhat annoyed that she asked him, but answered, “I’m trying to keep it out of the wrong hands.”

That struck her as odd. “Why this diamond in particular? Why are so many people after it? I didn’t get time to do my research as I usually would, but it seems weird that so many would be after this one.” Diamonds were abundant enough that this one in such high demand was definitely alarming.

Rhys sighed. “I wish you weren’t after it, too.”

“Well, I am, so can’t you tell me what’s so special about it?”

He turned her around to face him fully. “It’s inscribed with a formula for a drug that’s supposed to make the world sit up and take notice. More addictive and destructive than anything ever conceived of before.”

Something like that in Marco’s hands was terrifying. But she still needed it to keep Eric safe.

He could see that she hadn’t been deterred. “I see I haven’t convinced you to back off.”

“I can’t.”

He peered into her eyes. “Why not? What has this guy got over you?”

Ana stared right back at him. “He’s threatening my baby, Rhys.”
