TYLER

Emily is already awake when I open my eyes. She’s watching me with an unreadable expression on her face but smiles when she sees I’m up.

“Good morning,” I say.

She’s sitting with her legs drawn up and the sheets covering them. “Good morning.” She pauses. “So, last night was…unexpected.”

“Was it?” I take her hand in mine, playing with her fingers. I catch her eye with a smoldering glance. “I thought we’ve had something for some time. At least, I know I have. When you walk into a room, Emily, everything else becomes white noise.”

“Is that why you offered to do this?” she asks in a soft voice. “You could have just asked me out. You didn’t need to get involved in all this mayhem.”

I sit up. “I wanted to help.”

“You don’t have to do this, you know. If there is something between us, the last thing I want is for this charade to ruin it. I…I like you too.”

Those words send frissons of joy dancing through me. “I promised to do this for you, and I will.”

“And what happens when we get back?”

I kiss her. “Whatever you want.”
