Oz had gone quiet, and it was starting to scare me. He had sunk down into one of his father’s old chairs, running a hand over his face. His blue eyes had gone distant. He wasn’t looking at anything in particular, particularly me. Sitting on the floor wearing his shirt, I could feel myself getting colder as the not-too-distant kitchen clock ticked off the time. Oz remained silent.

“Oz,” I said softly, not able to find much strength in my voice. “I need you to say something.”

He didn’t come back to me. He was still out of arm’s reach, and his gaze didn’t really meet mine. Just a few moments ago, Oz had been so close. I had tangled around him like ivy climbing across his body. I was ready to grow against him for the rest of my life.

That feeling seemed more distant with every passing second.

“How did you find out?” He finally asked.

“I had my annual exam a few weeks ago,” I explained. “I knew I’d been feeling weird, but I hadn’t considered the possibility of being pregnant. My nurse practitioner told me there was probably a five percent chance of me getting pregnant while taking birth control. I thought we were being safe enough, but nothing is foolproof.”

Quiet for a moment, Oz questioned me again with, “How did Jenny know?”

“She was sitting on the couch when I came home that evening. I had a bunch of informational pamphlets in my hand, and she kind of ambushed me. I didn’t tell her much, but Jenny always gets her own ideas about things. She’s never been good with reality.”

I loved my sister, but I didn’t always like her. When we were young, she had been the fun sister who braided my hair and taught me things Mom didn’t want me to know about like boys and curse words. She took me to the mall to get my ears pierced and ice cream when I started crying after. There had been a time she was a sweet soul who loved the theater and performing. I put up with all her nonsense now for the sake of the girl I used to know, but I didn’t know if I could forgive her this time.

Her big mouth had put a crack in all my well-laid plans. Now, I was watching them shatter before me. I was trying to save the pieces, but I couldn’t move fast enough. Still sitting on the floor, I could hardly move at all.

“When was this?” Oz continued with his questions, his voice still distant.

“That night I went to dinner with Paul,” I confessed. “I had just come from the women’s health clinic, and I didn’t want to answer Jenny’s questions. That was the real reason I agreed to dinner that night. I needed to escape the apartment for a while because I didn’t want to talk about it.”

There was a cold edge to Oz’s voice when he spoke again. His blue eyes were starting to freeze over. His whole body was going rigid.
