19. The Assassin’s Test

I woke early the next evening and prepared myself for the test. Since I was not sure what to expect on this trip, I had packed for every situation I could possibly think of. I was ready for everything from a fancy dress ball to a fight with another vampire. I even brought my weapons with me. I had no idea what I would face during the assassin’s test, but I wanted to be ready for anything.

I put on some comfortable clothes and packed as many shuriken as I could easily carry. Being that this is called “the assassins test,” I had a feeling I might need them before the night was through. Shuriken were my favorite weapons; light, easy to carry, quiet, and very effective. Once I realized my venom could paralyze, I came up with an idea to make my shuriken even more effective. I enlisted Randolph’s help to find someone who could modify them so that the tips of the shurikens would hold a small amount of my venom. Now if I hit my enemy with a shuriken, my venom would enter their body and paralyze then. Even if it was for a few moments, this would surly give me the advantage. I could then choose to escape, or attack and inject my target with a full done of my venom with my fangs. I got the idea after I found out that Nora and Michael had been hit with a poison arrow and remembering how Sara extracted her own venom to help that Senator’s son. By putting the two strategies together, I now had a weapon that could paralyze anyone from a distance.

As I gathered my shurikens, I slipped a sharp, thin blade into my belt and slid a small dagger into my boot. I also made sure to bring a vial filled with Carmilla’s potion to mask my scent.

One of Lord Illyrius’s servants was waiting outside my door, and he led me through the west wing of the castle and out onto the grounds. There I found Father and Lord Illyrius waiting for me beside an impressive geometrical arrangement of flowerbeds.

“Good evening, my dear,” said Father “Have you made your decision?”

“I have. I will take the assassin’s test.”

“Excellent,” said Lord Illyrius, rubbing his hands together. “The premise of the test is simple. In a few minutes, you will enter the forest through that gate.” He nodded toward the hedge, and I noticed a small opening leading through it to the dark woods beyond. “There you will encounter a number of challenges. How you deal with them is up to you. There will be clues along the way to help you but they will not be easy to find. If you survive the night and complete all the challenges before sunrise, you pass the test.”

“If I survive the night?” I exclaimed. “What do you mean?”

The old vampire shrugged. “The premise of this test is to see how you will do under the most extreme conditions.
