Act Three
Valentineâs Day. It is the coldest week of the year and the characters wear corresponding layers.
Mason comes in with a few things dripping with water, followed by Hazel.
Mason These are less damaged like
Hazel Ok
Mason Shall I put them out there or?
Hazel Yes for now there
We canât let anybody go in there now if they
Mason No no out of bounds
Hazel If there was an accident or what /
Mason Totally get it
Iâll go and mop up or something
Later.
Hazel Oh Mason what about the piano?
Mason Fuck
He runs into the other room to go and get the piano.
Hazel Does it still work?
Mason Letâs see
He goes to the wall, plugs it in. Hazel looks out of the window.
Moment of suspense. Mason turns it on.
Mason Ok
It doesnât work at first â silence.
In silence he realises itâs probably broken.
Hazel Is it broken?
Can you get another one?
Mason Not likely
I should have
Taken it home with me
Itâs been really bad in there the last couple of weeks this rain is freakish like fair enough Iâve never seen it that before itâs so foul like the roof and Marc hasnât been using it for ages so I couldâve just taken it home itâs worse than last year fucking freakish storm shit. Sorry. Sorry Hazel.
Ah . . .
Heâs really upset but he tries again, nudges the keyboard around in some way, in the way that sometimes when we nudge a piece of electronic equipment, for some reason it begins to work.
He presses a button and one of the preset demos comes on.
Oh thank God thank God!
They laugh.
Weâll do the choir practice in here right?
Hazel Yeh
She sits and thinks about the lunch.
Enter Tharwa with Tala.
Hazel Hiya
Tharwa Hi Hazel what happened here today
Hazel Yeh oh Iâm so sorry love
We arenât able to do a lunch today, weâve had some flooding and the kitchen is out / and Mason
Mason Weâve had /
Hazel And I weâve had to fix it / yeh
Mason Fix it yeh sorry so / sorry
Hazel Sorry about the lunch I put it on my Facebook /
Tharwa Oh so there is no food.
Tala Iâm hungry Mummy!
(To Mason.) Is there still the choir?!
Mason Oh yeh
Yeh weâll do it but itâs gonna be down here thatâs all
Tharwa (in Arabic) Tala come to me
Tala CAN I GO TO THE CHOIR?
Tharwa We come back for the choir
Hazel Iâm so sorry
Tharwa No
Itâs ok itâs ok
Tala Iâm hungry
Hazel But we have biscuits and
Tharwa No no itâs ok thank you
Thank you.
Tala We come back for the choir! For the singing!
Tharwa Ok.
Hazel Sorry
Tharwa and Tala leave. Silence.
Hazel We must have something something we can
She goes to the kitchen, opens the hatch for a bit â we see some damage through it.
Maybe some sandwiches Iâve got bread and mayonnaise and
Mason Thereâs some cheese
Long silence as they make food â they are rebuilding something.
The bird flutters, but they donât speak about it.
Gently, there are a few lines about how to cut the sandwiches â Mason is cutting everything as if for children, in fours. Hazel notices.
Hazel Cut it like this like adult?
Mason Yep of course ok
Silence again.
