Nine
All around me, as far as my eyes can reach, there is nothing but a sea of flames. Thick black smoke rises in billowing clouds into the blackened sky. I spin from one direction to the next seeking any means of escape, the acrid stench of burning vegetation filling my lungs until breathing is impossible.
Where am I? How did I get here? This is not my home; it cannot be my home.
I search my mind for any recollection of how I came to be in such an awful place. Tears fill my eyes, brought forth by a combination of pain and fear. I stumble forward seeking something, anything, that could provide me with an indication of where I am. Beneath my palm I feel a familiar, rough texture. I stumble backwards lifting my head toward the sky, tears streaming down my soot-stained face.
This cannot be...
My beloved home stands as little more than a pyre. The branches of the Great Tree spread wide, their vines and needles ablaze, painting a grim picture of orange and red against a blackened sky. With a horrific series of groaning snaps, the limbs of my monolithic tree begin to fall, crashing around me with thunderous vibrations. As the limbs fall to the earth below, the flames begin to spread, licking at the ferns and brambles of the lower forest.
No! No! No! Make it stop, how do I make it stop? How did this happen? I panic, my mind racing faster than the heart of a fawn fleeing a wolf.
Coughing and sputtering through burning lungs, I turn in a semi-circle searching for any way to stop the spreading blaze. To my back, the Great Tree continues to fall while plumes of smoke continue to rise, the forest belching wave after wave of toxic smoke into the sky. I fall to my knees unable to take anymore, the heat so intense my skin begins to burn.
I press my eyes into my palms, unable to see through the tears, not wanting to see through them any longer. Then, as quickly as I appeared here in this horrible version of my world, everything slips away like a fine mist scattered on the wind. No fire, no Great Tree, just silence.
Now, where am I? I wrap my arms around my knees and bury my face in my thighs, unable to comprehend this twisted reality. A voice calls out to me, but I cannot make out what it is saying.
âIs someone there? Hello? Can you hear me?â I call out hoarsely, but no one answers me. Panic fills my still burning chest.
What is this? Why is this happening to me? Where are Kal and Chiron? I wonder frantically.
Strange images begin to swirl before me, and I finally recognize this strange occurrence for what it is: a message from the guardians before me. However, I cannot make sense of what they are trying to tell me. Among the images, I can make out a strange âtâ shaped symbol, three falling stars, and several golden rings.
